Summary

This is a work of narrative nonfiction based on the last days of the fugitive Raoul Moat, a Geordie bodybuilder and mechanic who became nationally notorious in Britain one hot summer's week when, after killing his ex-girlfriend's new lover, shooting her in the stomach, and blinding a policeman, he disappeared into the woods of Northumberland, evading discovery for seven days - even when TV tracker Ray Mears was employed by the police to find him.

Bizarrely, alcoholic ex-England footy star Paul 'Gazza' Gascoigne also played a role, trying to get a fishing rod and a chicken to Moat by taxi.

Eventually, cornered by the police, Moat shot himself. Andrew Hankinson, a journalist and a Geordie, tells Moat's story in the second person, which means that the listener is uncomfortably close at all times to Raoul Moat. It is an audio experience unrelieved by authorial distance or omniscient interpretation.

Everything comes from Moat's mind - from his recordings and writings - and the narrative Hankinson has woven is compelling, even if Moat's sentimentality, suspicion, and self-pity are never far from sight.

This is a narrative in the great tradition of Norman Mailer or Hunter S. Thompson - or, given its North of England flavour, Gordon Burn or David Peace.

Incredible read and the narrator was fantastic. Brings to life the rounded shadows of a troubled man.

Unbelievably well written and narrated

What a flash into the mind of raoul moat I’ve just listened to. I enjoyed very much the effort to create such a experience by the author and the incredible narration to give me a snap shot in the life and end of Raoul Moat.
I had read other good reviews of the books and always considered listening or reading it one day, I highly recommend this experience, it is not uplifting or inspiring in the traditional sense, but it does give something different which somehow muster those words through the insight to the Raouls mind and the detailed experience of his life and final days.

Failed by the system

Put together from a number of sources to create a brilliant POV account of Raoul Moat, showing the lead up to his demise, his thought processes and ultimately the failure of our system on a social and political level. Engrossing but ultimately heartbreaking, a superb insight into a troubled man screwed over by life, society and the failure of government policies to act and care for those in need.

An extremely sad story

Brilliant book, so well read and considered. A very sad, solemn story but made me feel the frustration of Moat. I remember this story but there is great depth to this book. I did find myself feeling more sorry for Moat than his victims, it would have been good to cover them in more detail.

Overall a really interesting book from the view of Moat, the format worked brilliantly, maybe too well!
