Summary
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Where Have All the Bullets Gone?, written and read by Spike Milligan.
Back to those haunting days in Italy in 1944, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, with lava running in great red rivulets down the slope towards us, and Jock taking a drag on his cigarette and saying, "I think we've got grounds for a rent rebate."
The fifth volume of Spike Milligan's unsurpassed account of life as a bombardier in World War Two sees our hero dispatched from the front line to a psychiatric hospital and from there to a rehabilitation camp. Considered loony (and "unfit to be killed in combat by either side"), he becomes embroiled in his own private battle with melancholy.
But it is music, wit and a little help from his friends - including one Gunner Harry Secombe - that help carry him through to his first stage appearances....

A classic read.
A classic read read by an utter genius.
Spike Milligans reading of his own work brings emotion and madcap humour like only he could.

An excellent told story by the excellent and funny Spike Milligan
Still can’t get over the way that he laughs at the story, still action story, and actually read
Looking forward to listening to the next volume

Brilliant
Another brilliant account of his last few months of WW2, full of humour and pathos from the Don Corleone of British Comedy.

A different way to enjoy these memoirs!
Having been given these books to read whilst in hospital many years ago, I would re-read them every so often. I only started to get them in Audible recently and what a revelation! Spike was an excellent mimic and his accents are spot on. His lyrical descriptive style comes across even more when he reads his work, and his barely contained laughter and sadness at his adventures add true meaning to the words written. Highly recommended listening. The only drawback is there are none of the hilarious pictures and posters of the books, but I imagine you have these anyway if you are reading these reviews...
