Summary

On paper, things looked good for Mark Rice-Oxley: wife, children, fulfilling job. But at his 40th birthday party his world crumbled as he succumbed to depression.… Many men suffer from depression yet it remains a taboo subject. By telling his story, Mark Rice-Oxley hopes to enable others to tell theirs. This is a memoir that is brim-full of experience, understanding, and hope for all who read it.

A story of strength and courage

I decided to listen to this after reading his Guardian article about depression following one of my many searches on the internet trying to find meaning for my own problems with this horrible condition. It is good to hear from older people suffering in this way as I spent the first 55 years of my life unaware of the crippling effect this would have on me. The most valuable aspect of his book, for me, was seeing how it built up gradually due to the expectations placed on us from childhood and the desire to meet and exceed them. This helped me understand my own experience of wanting to be the best, most successful, in a fruitless competition mostly with myself. The damage for Mark was years in the making. Many phrases he uses I have used myself and it helped me to feel less alone in my ongoing pain and struggle to get the better of my 'thing.'
It's an uncomfortable listen at times, occasionally I had to turn off and weep but I'm glad I kept going to hear his recovery story.
