Summary

'The true inspiration was that Olympic gold won by Chris Boardman in Barcelona.... I was so in awe of Chris Boardman.' (Sir Bradley Wiggins)

You may know him as the much-loved copresenter of ITV's Tour de France coverage or enjoyed his BBC Olympic coverage, but beyond the easy charm Chris Boardman is one of our greatest, most inspiring cyclists.

In 2001, when the bible of the sport, Cycling Weekly, ran a poll to decide the greatest British cyclist, his was the name that topped the list. It was Boardman's lone achievements in the '80s and '90s - Olympic track gold, the world hour record, repeatedly claiming the yellow jersey in the Tour de France - that lit the spark for modern British cycling.

His endeavours both on and off the bike have made him the founding father of current golden generation - without him there would simply be no Hoy, Wiggins or Cavendish. It is a story full of intrigue from Olympic success, the famous duels with Graeme Obree, the insanity of the Tour de France. Chris became a legend for his combination of physical ability and technical preparation, and he almost single-handedly took British cycling from wool shirts and cloth caps into the era of marginal gains.

Indeed, after his career on the bike ended, a new chapter began as the backroom genius behind GB cycling. As head of the R&D team known as The Secret Squirrel Club, he has been responsible for the technical innovations that made the difference in 2012. Boardman Bikes is the best-selling premium bike range in the country, as used by the Brownlee brothers for their Olympic triathlon success.

Excellent

Great honest insight into a very interesting man. Good insider info on Team GBs cycling team including his influence on Brad Wiggins's early career and The Secret Squirrel Club. I learnt a lot about his amazing hour attempts and incredible TDF career. Best book I've listen to all year.

Great insight to the rebirth of British cycling <br />

Long before the 2008 Olympics British Cycling were busy laying the foundations of a cycling renaissance in the UK. This book gives a great insight to how that came about, which includes, luck, good fortune and miticulas planning most of which is layed out in entainting details and good story telling. I've often thought Chris's achievements were not truly appreciated as back in 1992 the British public did not have the same love of the sport as they currently do today. This book reminded me just what a great cyclist Chris was and the overall impact he has had. Thanks for sharing Chris.

Enjoyable read

I've read a lot of cycling bios and this comes in my top 3 of must reads. It was great to read about a cyclist who although I admired, has tended to come across as a bit grumpy and aloof. I think this book has helped me to understand him a little better, what drives him and ultimately that he's not as grumpy as he can come across.

What a great read

I knew of Chris Boardman, from the TV, and that he'd done a bit of cycling. The book enlightened me to just how much cycling he'd done and how good he was. He explains the impacts of success on his ever growing family and how a boy with a passion for woodwork got to the top of his sport.

A really good read and well worth you time. Thanks for sharing Chris Boardman

more than just a man and a lotus bike. v good.

some of the story you will know as a keen cyclist but learning boardman bikes started as two people in a coffee shop, and the details of some of the Olympics kit design was fantastic less about the man more about just how much he has done for British cycling. top bloke all round well worth a listen.

Enjoyed a lot

I wasn't really a Boardman fan so much in his track days. I preferred Obree. It was good to see him in the Tour and enjoyed his courage after he retired. I'm glad he is doing what he is doing for cycle safety. I wasn't sure about his biography but really enjoyed it.

Brilliant Boardman

I've always loved Chris Boardman and what he did/ does for British cycling so I hoped that this book would back it up. Apart from a few dodgy pronunciations from Mr Mcgann the book was superb. Boardman for prime minister!

Boardman Turbulence & Truimph

Interesting listen of an amazing journey.
A very talented cyclist that has achieved many great things, set and raised the bar for the cyclists that followed.
An amazing contribution to the growth and success of British Cycling, especially with all the secret squirrel stuff.
A must listen if you are cycling fan.
Keep up the amazing work on & off the bike.
