Summary

The award-winning TV adaption The Durrells left its seven million fans with questions: What happened to the family - and what took them to Corfu in the first place? This audiobook has the answers....

Simon Nye's TV series, The Durrells, is based loosely on Gerald Durrell's Corfu Trilogy and in particular his much-loved best seller, My Family and Other Animals. These books in turn are based somewhat loosely on actual events. The real-life Durrells went to Corfu at the urging of Lawrence Durrell, who was already living on the island with his wife, Nancy Myers. Their intent was to keep the family together as his mother, Louisa, was drinking heavily and recovering from a breakdown; 'We can be proud of the way we brought her up', Larry said, only half jokingly, of the family's subsequent Corfu sojourn.

Michael Haag's book covers the background to the Durrell family's years in Corfu, including their time in India, where all the children were born, and where their father, a brilliant civil engineer, had died. It recalls the real-life characters the Durrells encountered on Corfu, notably the biologist and poet Theodore Stephanides, and the taxi driver Spiros Halikiopoulos. And Haag tells the story of how the Durrells left Corfu, including Margo's return intent on joining the Greek resistance and Leslie's romance in England with the family's Corfite maid and friend, Maria Kondos. Further chapters cover what happened to the family in later life; here, Lawrence and Gerald Durrell's biographies are well known, but little has previously been written of Margo, Leslie and Louisa. Haag has fascinating stories to tell of them all.

Really interesting and amusing tales of the family

We listened to this as a family after watching the drama on TV recently, it's so fun to hear extra stories about the characters and really interesting to hear about the patents and their beginnings abroad.

Perfect companion to My Family and Other Animals

Gives lots of background on the Durrell family and other iconic characters in Gerry’s bestseller, such as Spiro and Theodore. Funny and informative at the same time. If you enjoyed My Family and Other Animals as a book or the TV series and you want to find out more, this will answer your questions and provide a historical context. Highly recommended.

DISAPPOINTING

Felt so cheated. I bought this books the same time as MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS. After having read the latter I had to keep checking facts from it. It is like reading the same book. I presume GERALD DURRELL'S is the original and this is just a blatant copy

Fascinating

It was interesting to learn more about Durrells lives from other people’s perspectives and also how Gerald Durrell came to open his zoo and his idea behind it.

Brilliantly written

Brilliantly and respectfully written. This book offers an honest but generous explanation and description of the Darrell’s and their associates. Answering many of the questions left open by the beloved books and authors

The Real Durrells

Well read. Very enjoyable and illuminating. The real facts not the television version. Absorbing and well worth the time.

Like Michael Bond and A.A.Milne for adults .

Except that this warm story of spills and awakening really took place. Immerse yourself and live in a world of sunlight and cheerful colourful people for a while. It's an escape to another time and place that you will want to recreate for your family.
