Summary

In this evocative and gorgeously wrought memoir reminiscent of Rob Sheffield's Love Is a Mixtape and George Hodgman's Bettyville, Michael Ausiello - a respected TV columnist and founder and editor in chief of TVLine.com - remembers his late husband and the lessons, love, and laughter that they shared throughout their 14 years together.

For the past decade, TV fans of all stripes have counted upon Michael Ausiello's insider knowledge to get the scoop on their favorite shows and stars. From his time at Soaps in Depth to his influential stints at TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly to his current role as founder and editor in chief of the wildly popular website TVLine.com, Michael has established himself as the go-to expert when it comes to our most popular form of entertainment.

What many of his fans don't know, however, is that while his professional life was in full swing, Michael had to endure the greatest of personal tragedies: His husband, Kit Cowan, was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of neuroendocrine cancer. Over the course of 11 months, Kit and Michael did their best to combat the deadly disease, but Kit succumbed to his illness in February 2015.

In this heartbreaking and darkly hilarious memoir, Michael tells the story of his harrowing and challenging last year with Kit while revisiting the 13 years that preceded it and how the undeniably powerful bond between him and Kit carried them through all manner of difficulty - always with laughter front and center in their relationship. Instead of a tale of sadness and loss, Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies is an unforgettable, inspiring, and beautiful testament to the resilience and strength of true love.

Heartbreaking, life-affirming, extremely honest

First off a public health warning - avoid listening to this audiobook while driving. Tear-filled eyes can cause accidents.

Perhaps surprisingly for a book about a one year battle with a horrific and rare cancer, and for which the title lets you know there’s no miraculous recovery, this is a very uplifting book.

The author is unflinchingly honest throughout. Not just about the impact of the disease itself, but about his whole relationship with his husband, the hero of the title. This is a story about a whole relationship, not just an 11-month cancer battle, and it’s exceedingly well told.

Highly recommended listen.

Heartbreakingly beautiful

This book is really heartbreaking. I was crying in probably the first ten minutes but also completely enthralled. Ausiello is so frank and honest and unflinching in his portrayal of the process of losing a loved one. The book is sad but also really funny and I’m sure a great tribute to his late husband. Very well done.

Beautifully written and narrated

Such a sad - yet lovely - tribute. I appreciate the candidness and intimacy of the details. I felt I’d lost something too at the end. Really hurt me.

One of the best love stories

Real. Gut wrenching. Funny. Sad. I felt like I was right there with Mike and Kit as their love story unfolded and then heartbreakingly ended. Seriously one of the best books I have ever listened to.

Full Hearts, Watered Eyes, Can’t Lose

My heart is very full. Michael reading his story was such a treat, so much so that I think this is the best way to experience the book. Loved it. Blessed that we are allowed to witness and experience their love through this medium.
