Summary

We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed, 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion. The grenade took an age to travel through its 20 metre arc. A dark, small oval-shaped package of misery the size of a peach....

April 2004: Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers flew into Southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping. But there was no peace to keep. Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained firefight British troops had faced for over 50 years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and 50-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias. For six months they fought alone: isolated, besieged and under constant enemy fire. Their heroic stand was a modern-day Rorke's Drift.

Cracking listen!

having been to Iraq on challenger 2 I can relate to this book. I knew the cimic story already but brilliant to hear it first hand. My only issue was with the way he said "gimpy" it's pronounced as "jimpy" unless PWRR called it that I don't know but we knew it as "jimpy" still a top book!

Brilliant and entertaining first hand account

No B.S. or bravado just a sensational and significant first hand account of a chapter in military history

Narrator is poor sounds like he’s 15

Was interesting at first but the narrator was just too young or sounded to young for the man he was portraying and his accents he put on...... really poor ruined it for me.

Odd details will spoil for military men

Loved the book and story.. Unfortunately odd things like gpmg(general purpose machine gun) nick name spelt gimpy on the name I'm sure but said as 'jimpy' will grate f16s quote of 'flying from carriers' etc.. I'm nit picking but films and now obviously audio book performances get it wrong and the grinds my gears

Great story, well told.

Probably the audiobook I've most enjoyed so far.
I'd never really known the story before so didn't know what to expect. But was pleasantly surprised.

Great book TERRIBLE NARRATION

The story was good. descriptions good BUT possibly the WORST narration ever. Poor accents, terrible expression, tries too hard. Just BAD BAD BAD. Totally ruined a good book. will avoid this reader in future, however good the book is.

Bring out the gimp

Loads of mistakes by the narrator. Surely someone listens to it before it is realised?

Amazing story that keeps building

Extremely well written and narrated. As a true story i did not know where this was going and i kept expecting that the action would drop off. Little did i realize how far the action would continue to build. It was upsetting to think that these guys did not have 50 caliber rifles and extensive drone support, but the descriptions of the air support they did occasionally enjoyed was thoroughly exciting. This is a must read/listen book

Spectacular!

By far the best British military account ive listened to.
If you enjoyed American Sniper, Bullet Magnet, Among You, Apache, Bravo Two Zero etc then you must try this one... its simply brilliant!
