Summary

"I don't believe in the term gang. Yes I've had a violent past and made reckless choices I'm not proud of but it's too easy (and lazy) to throw around this gang label. We were just a group of multi-cultural kids who lived on common ground and shared a similar struggle.

I'm not trying to say I'm just some victim of circumstances, the truth is I became a victim of my excuses. There was a strong come-unity but we also came from broken families and had crime, drugs and violence all around us. This social deprivation causes misguided pride, confused loyalty and thinking we had an extended family on the estate.

We didn't really act like no family though. Disputes were settled with manpower, knives and guns. Familiar faces from childhood became bitter enemies in war with only a road separating us from the frontline. We were in prisons the size of our boroughs and each estate felt like a different prison wing. The joke is we thought we owned the streets. We thought we were free.

I've lost some good people to the streets. And I don't just mean death and prison. i mean the street mentality took away a part of us. Took away who we were destined to become. Our futures.

This is the story of my journey. It's a reflection of how I fell out of one system and rushed into another. The story of how I became a prisoner to the streets and somehow escaped."

Wow!!! A Must Read/listen... 10/10 - wicked Story and nuff love to Robyn Travis

The fact Robyn talks so openly about his life on the streets is powerful in itself and each chapter has me gripped and wanting to find out what happened next!

Such a well written book and 100% needs to be read or listened too. I picked this book up and didn’t leave it until I had finished.... perfectly written!

My nephew is currently on remand and has also read this book, coming from no education he read the book from cover to cover and had him gripped too!!

Can’t wait to read the next 2 books.... best read in a long time!!!

A lot to be learned

From this book. Having a 15 year old son myself who I know would be interested in listening to this I would say the education system could do a lot worse than introducing this to the curriculum. In my opinion it would do a lot more good than harm. Well worth a listen for parents and students alike.

This was really good

Overall this was really good. I think what would made this even better is some sort of podcast explaining some parts or having a second edition reviewing chapters.

Educational and real

So much I could say about this book. It was a real eye opener to what goes on in the lives of others. Very emotional and difficult to listen to at times as the content led to my many hours of relection and realisation that I really have very little knowledge about life on the streets and how this impacts on the lives of others. The book is read by the author which really adds to the overall experience. This is absolutely worth a read. I missed seeing the Author when he visited the North of England and would definitely attend any future events he holds because this book really has made an impact on me. I'll down load and listen to the others once I have had time to fully reflect on this experience. Thank you Robyn Travis.

Brilliant read

Not normally my subject but found it intriguing. Well narrated by the man himself, it gives a great insight to what many are oblivious to - ghetto Great Britain and the sad case of black on black senseless killings. Brilliant story and a heartwarming end. Recommend.

Thank you Robyn Travis

An amazing life experience translated authentically by a young black man with the odds stacked against him who was never told how great he really was/is. So many black children have to learn to survive before they can thrive. Can you imagine, no-one ever told you that you would grow up to be an author. I hope you read this review, one day.

Grew up in the same era!

Brings back memories, Jadie went to my school and I grew up around loads of Hackney guys from 99 to 05. It’s sad to think how many lives have been lost over postcode wars, you’d think it would have always been Hackney vs Tottenham but both locations imploded on themselves due to smaller gangs within the counties.
