Publisher's Summary

I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant. I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than planting-time, harvest-time, cherry-time, spring-time, or fall-time. A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege. I was not allowed to make any inquiries of my master concerning it. He deemed all such inquiries on the part of a slave improper and impertinent, and evidence of a restless spirit. The nearest estimate I can give makes me now between twenty-seven and twenty-eight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835, I was about seventeen years old.

    "Great book"

I never knew much of frederick douglass other than he was a slave that manage to escape the chains of slavery. This audio book however has enlightened me to a state of appreciation beyond what I thought I could reach for people who have been through slavery. The life of Frederick douglass is definitely a eye opener in this respect and a great book I recommend to everyone all ages.

"Painful but so good to listen to"

It hurts to hear about the realities of slavery in America. So bad. But listening is so good to make sure we do not repeat history. What are we doing now that will make people cringe 150 years from now?

A couple glitches/repeats from the narrator that could've been edited out...that's the only reason for 4 stars there but he does a great job reading.

"Whoever edited this did not do a good job."

There are multiple spots where lines repeat because clips weren't put together properly. The book otself is an interesting look into American slavery.

    "Everyone should read it."

My son recommended this one to me after reading it at school, and I was embarrassed I hadn't read it already. Beautifully written first-person account that stands the test of time, and sheds light onto the hidden history of our country.

The reader, Steven Anderson, gave a beautiful performance--a clear voice that doesn't distract from Douglass' prose. I took one star of just because the production is a little glitchy, with skips and retakes that should have been corrected by the producer.

    "A gut wrenching autobiography"

This autobiography is a gut-wrenching exposure of the truth of slavery in the South. I believe it should be a part of every history curriculum for high school students in America.

"A must read for American history"

No Hollywood movie can capture the true essence of slavery in America, and no lector can really tell of Douglass's courage. I think you have to read his own words to truly appreciate him, and the system that made him the slave and the man.
