In this unique, profoundly inspirational memoir, Divorce Court star Judge Lynn Toler shares her mother's wisdom for learning to conquer anger and become immune to insult. Toler credits her mother's "rules" for life - a life that saw her grow up the daughter of a poor teen mother and endure a husband who suffered mental illness and alcoholism - with providing the grounding for her own success and happiness. Toler shows how the mindset of "a black woman who knew how to make things work" taught her the power of knowing how to manage one's emotional business-lessons that this book offers in wrenching stories written in spare and graceful prose. My Mother's Rules is an unforgettable book that will captivate readers with its illustrations of how to rise above the most difficult circumstances and find peace and success in life.
I would recommend this to to anyone and everyone. It's informative, perceptive and funny. It's a great read full of advise on how to tackle everyday annoyances and get by in life without losing it. Five stars!

I loved the story Judge Lynn shares in her book. After hearing so many audiobooks, I wish the production could have been less rushed. Sometimes you needed to take a breath after her wisdom before jumping right into the next thing. Again not a critique on Judge Lynn at all. I'm going to listen again and write the rules out (or just buy a copy of the book).

This was an amazing book!! Full of great lessons, and explanations!! I'm blessed to have found it!!
I really love this book and the common sense of it all. After reading this book I found a new Judge to watch on TV full of insight and down right street smarts. I hope she writes anther book full of rules. Good Read
I could barely drag myself away from listening. Watching Judge Lynn on Divorce Court, I have come to respect her greatly. Her wise advice is unparalleled. One would never believe that someone who lived the life that she has growing up that she could have become so filled with wisdom beyond belief. I have even more respect for her now, as if that could be possible. Knowing her story, what a very brave and honest woman. I hated for the book to end. Judge Toler's life story is a testament to us all that no matter the difficulties in life, we cannot only make it through, we can thrive. I thank her for sharing information that could cause her and her family to be judged very harshly. Because of her courage in doing so, I am forever grateful and will hold her in the highest esteem possible now and always.
Really Loved It. Worth every penny. Genuine & Well dome. Thamk you Lyn n ! 💝
Thank you Judge Toler for writing this!! I have found tidbits in here that will help me to overcome some of my issues!!
I loved everything about this book. It gave me another way of looking at things. How to make sense of emotions and how to compartmentalize situations in everyday life.
this is advice that I find lacking for most people and if one person can appy these rules, it will make everyone around that person happier.
my reason for reading this book is because want as much control over my emotions as possible. I am a very sensitive person and I cant stand that everyone knows ( and I dont even act out). I want tools to deal with myself because I am making it my mission to live my best and happiest life. this means not only having power over myself, but effectively communicating with my loved ones- especially my lover, so that our bonds can be tighter & they can lean in. I am the QUEEN of my home: my state of being affects everyone. the men in my home do not believe in self help books and my son says they are fraudsters. as I read this book, I tried some of the techniques given: my son didnt think much about it, but my love paused the first time and then the next time he expressed his relief in my understanding him (even though he ended up totally agreeing with me).
some of the rules were already in rotation for me and maybe for many, but as a whole the advice is practical and phenomenal. it's as though village elders got together and gave thier collective advice from their experiences. this book should taught along with health in high school. I wish it can be made into an adult seminar because so many people lack communication skills. this is a personal issue for me so I will be listening to this book in a loop until the rules become 2nd nature.
It was the same joy of listening to an aunt regale you with her brilliance and challenges in the living room during a family holiday!
