Summary

A collection of the most memorable moments from old-school rural physicians who each practiced medicine for more than 50 years in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Hilarious, heroic, heartwarming true stories of miracle cures, ghost dogs, and much madcap medical mayhem. Jourdan's work is often compared to James Herriot and Bill Bryson. Her first book is on hundreds of lists of best books of the year, best book club books, and funniest books.

Mediocre for Me

This was not as humorous as I expected. I actually liked the one liners better than most of the stories. I'm not sure why I didn't connect with this book; maybe there were too many stories with minimal detail about the people involved. The male narrator threw me when it was supposed to be in the female author's voice.

Great!

nonfiction, audiobook, medical, rural, short-stories
Comprised of numerous reminiscences from multiple country doctors preferring to practice in the backwoods of Appalachia from the 1920's till fairly recently. With minimal alterations, the incidents could be backwoods NSW, Minnesota/Wisconsin, or Alberta. But then, I've been a nurse since the Revolutionary War (or at least the reenactments). I absolutely loved it!
For some idiotic reason this Whispersync has been hiding in my TBR pile since March 2016!
Carey Jones is perfect as narrator.

Excellent book!!!

I am a nurse and I live in Southwest Virginia and we had a wonderful doctor here who reminds me of these docs.. Dr. Norman C Ratliff. He has passed away but was so wonderful to his patients... many times never paid a dime! He was approached many times to do a story about himself, but he always declined GREAT BOOK and the narrator is fabulous!!!

Heroes One and all

this book is about mostly men and the women and families that support them. I dare say that these men and women have a special place prepared for them in Heaven.

A bonafidentribute to heroes

True stories of country doctors in the mountains. A gem that will leave a smile on your face. I am blessed to live in the paradise of the Blue Ridge Mountains and I still see many of the characteristics described in this book in my neighbors.

James Heriot for good people. You will be happy you read this book

Excellent Book

Loved it! God Bless these doctors for they are truly God's gift to us. They aren't in medicine to make the money and become rich.

Medicine Men

Very well done. Entertaining and moves at a good pace. As an RN for many years it was easy to relate to doctors and patients. In fact, I listened twice to the book . Thanks for an enjoyable book.
