Summary
On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the world in which our best-loved novelist lived. This new telling of the story of Jane's life shows us how and why she lived as she did, examining the rooms, spaces and possessions which mattered to her and the way in which home is used in her novels to mean both a place of pleasure and a prison. It wasn't all country houses and ballrooms; in fact her life was often a painful struggle. Jane famously lived a 'life without incident', but with new research and insights Lucy Worsley reveals a passionate woman who fought for her freedom. A woman who, far from being a lonely spinster, in fact had at least five marriage prospects, but who in the end refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy.

Superb
A superb book to read on paper, or any format. But unavailable on CD so this download is the only way. But it's so worth it, lovely reading and in depth domestic history wrapping round Jane's life. Worsley just reads the introduction, which means the long book is read by a voice one is less familiar with, but is much better for engaging with the content.

Prepare to be Indignant
A superbly researched account, as one would expect from the excellent Ms Worsley, this really gives an eye-opening insight into the lesser-known aspects of Jane Austen’s life.
It’s far from an easy read (in my opinion). It seems that most of society surrounding Austen (such as relatives, the law, society’s rules of status, business associates-even royalty) callously (and often heedlessly) denuded the author of her rights, inheritances, time, work, respect, esteem, financial stability and status.
Honestly, the picture it paints is quite disgusting and I became more incensed as I progressed through. But this is what Georgian society was all about: there were far, far worse abuses going on at the time (some of which are touched on by Worsley), so arguably, it could have been a lot worse.
It’s not all hideous, though. There are huge comforts that can also be taken from this story. However, I’m not going to comment on those, less I be guilty of writing a “spoiler”.

A great history of Jane Austen
Lucy Worsley has the ability to transport you to the place and time that is being talked about. It has given me a better understanding of Jane's writing and a wish that I had been able to meet her.

Wonderful portrait of Jane!
I found this so engaging and so enlightening. Thoroughly comprehensive description of Jane Austen, her life, her homes and her books in the context of what was happening in society in general, and her family in particular. It showed the influences of her day to day life, family and friends on her written characters. Superbly researched and written. I think Jane would have been pleased. 💖

Enjoyable and interesting
Loved every second of this book - and although the performance is excellent it would have been interesting to hear Lucy Worsley’s voice reading her words.
Highly recommended.
It was full of fascinating details that Lucy so cleverly uses to bring Janes story to life.
