Publisher's Summary

In the highly anticipated sequel to her New York Times best seller, Etched in Sand, Regina Calcaterra pairs with her youngest sister, Rosie, to tell Rosie's harrowing yet ultimately triumphant story of childhood abuse and survival.

They are five kids with five different fathers and an alcoholic mother who leaves them to fend for themselves for weeks at a time. Yet through it all, they have each other. Rosie, the youngest, is fawned over and shielded by her older sister, Regina. Their mother, Cookie, blows in and out of their lives "like a hurricane, blind and uncaring to everything in her path".

But when Regina emancipates herself as a minor and escapes, her siblings are separated. And as Rosie discovers after Cookie kidnaps her from foster care, the one thing worse than being abandoned by her mother is living in Cookie's presence. Beaten physically, abused emotionally, and forced to labor at the farm where Cookie settles in Idaho, Rosie refuses to give in. Like her sister, Regina, Rosie has an unfathomable strength in the face of unimaginable hardship - enough to propel her out of Idaho and out of a nightmare.

Filled with maturity and grace, Rosie's memoir continues the compelling story begun in Etched in Sand - a shocking yet profoundly moving testament to sisterhood and indomitable courage.

    Any additional comments?

I have listened to both sister's books and come away a bit ashamed to consider my own life challenges as quite as difficult as before. The ability to survive not only in tact but to have come as far as these sisters and brother have...and with the willingness to share their story has changed my heart forever and i am blessed to have listened to both books.

Thank you to the family for sharing their stories thank you for sharing how love can keep strong even in distance and it takes one person to anchor you and one day at a time we can walk through hell and become more than a statistic.

    Story
    "Moving memoir"

After finishing Etched in Sand by Rosie's sister Regina Calcaterra, I missed the stories of the five children I'd come to know. They are sad stories, but the love and perseverance shared by these siblings is so powerful, it left me yearning for more. Rosie delivers as she tells her stories of hurricane Cookie. My heart still aches for this family. I'm moved by the friendships that carried Rosie through and led her to be a loving mother. What a beautiful legacy Rosie and her siblings have created by breaking the cycle.

"There is no greater strength ...."

Than that of child's will . This book allows us to see there is hope and strength in every child. As a mother it helps you to know that loving your child is the greatest gift you can give them. As a person this book allows you to heal with Rosie and know that some of our struggles pale in comparison; it will change your day your week and for me many days beyond that. Thank you Rosie

    Story
    "Emotionally moving"

I'm feeling so many emotions over hearing this gut wrenching true story. I truly despise the monsters who treat children this way. You and your siblings are a blessing. I'm so very sorry for what happened to you and your siblings. You all deserved so much better. I began listening to your sisters story about half way through our 12 hour drive to Colorado on July 1st. I began listening to your story on our way back. These were the first audio books I had ever experienced. The story was well told to the point that I felt like I was right there with you. 5 stars all the way.

    "WHAT A BOOK!"

Read both memoirs, Etched In Sand and now, Girl, Unbroken. It us a fascinating book. I have to say, both books are good. But, Girl Unbroken is GREAT! Exceptional and very hard to go a day without listening to it. Rosie has such an amazing story. The end, was how it should be, with no disappointments. I truly loved this book. Very harrowing story, great detail. An amazing lady with all she endured with her Mother. I am surprised she survived. Inspirational indeed. I love Rosie! I recommend that you read both books. First Etched In the sand and then Girl Unbroken. Glad I know her story.

    Story
    "Painful, honest and heartbreaking"
Would you listen to Girl Unbroken again? Why?

Absolutely! The story was so raw and emotional, but so wonderfully told. I listened to "Etched in Sand" right before I listened to this book, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. I had no idea. This story was completely different. It was so sad, but told in a way that was so eloquent and truly remarkable to listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I wouldn't say I had a favorite character for a book like this, but Rosie was strong and inspiring.

What does Rosie Maloney and Regina Calcaterra bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Getting to actually hear Rosie tell her story out loud was incredible. Having the author as the narrator was an experience you do not want to miss with this book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The entire book moved me. When Cookie finally believes that Rosie is being molested and then that hope is taken away from her was one of the most painful parts of the book. The fact that she could continue on after that was unbelievable to me.

    Any additional comments?

This is a must listen to book. I'm so glad that Rosie was willing to share her story with the world. It truly shows what an amazing person she is.
