Summary

Fred Dibnah's World celebrates the life and work of Britain's best known steeplejack and national treasure, Fred Dibnah. Before his death in 2004, Fred presented many popular series, including Magnificent Monuments, The Age of Steam and Made in Britain, all of which attracted viewers in their millions.

Fred is the companion to the 12-part BBC2 series celebrating the life of this great man, which combines highlights from some of Dibnah's classic programmes with previously unseen footage. The book can of course go much further than the series, including an extraordinarily account of Fred's childhood which evokes a lost England and our great industrial heritage. Fred's passion for the glories of the Victorian age and his fascination with the landscape he grew up in, plus his admiration for the craftsmen and labourers who made it all possible, captivate us on every page. Fred is the personification of everything that made England great in the first place. And this is a glorious tribute to a man whom millions came to love.

Superb

Like a lot of others I love and appreciate the work and knowledge of Dr Fred Dibnah. Having watched all of his released TV programmes I was impressed and loved the passion Fred had about the industrial age amongst others. The way Fred explained things made it easy to understand. I loved this book and the narrator almost perfectly voiced Fred's tone of accent , loved that !
The reason I have the book 4 stars instead of 5 is that I thought it was all too short , not a negative really as I just didn't want it to end. Great story of a wonderful gentleman Fred Dibnah.

Earthy, compelling and sad.

listening to an audiobook where the presenter imitates the subject, I thought would not be the best route forward - how wrong I was.

Clive's delivery of the story of Fred, is truly compelling listening. The more you hear, the more you want to hear.

Having grown up fascinated by his numerous television appearances, avidly following them, you might think there is nothing more to learn, not so. Fred's biography summarises his life, filling in the gaps you didn't realise were there.

But be warned, the end of the book is very sad, documenting his final months with great compassion. year inducing indeed...

A real man

I always used to enjoy his TV documentaries, he came across as a man of the people with a can do attitude. This book does well in giving you an insight to the life both of a personal nature and indeed the public side, the last chapter is a celebration of what he stood for and is very sad that I was quite moved.

Great account of a brilliant man.

This book is a brilliant account of Fred's life. A great look into the inspiring amount of passion he held for industry, engineering and steam. if you're looking already, it's worth it.
