Publisher's Summary

Nathan was different and Sally knew it. From his early childhood, Nathan was bursting with creativity and uncontainable energy, struggling not only with learning issues but also with anxiety and OCD. He saw the world through his own unique lens - one that often caused him to be labeled as "bad", "troubled", or someone in need of "fixing". Bravely choosing to listen to her motherly intuition rather than the loud voices of the world, Sally dared to believe that Nathan's differences could be part of an intentional design from a loving Creator with a plan for his life. She trusted that the things that made him different were the very things that could make him great.

Join Sally and Nathan as they share their stories from a personal perspective as mother and son. If you are in need of help and hope in your own journey with an outside-the-box child, or if you're an adult trying to make sense of your differences, you'll find deep insight, resonance, and encouragement in this book. Dare to love and nurture the "different" one in your life.

What the Critics Say

"Reading the unique perspectives of both mother and child is powerful. Moreover, the love that flows throughout this book makes even the most difficult experiences hope-filled and encouraging. I cannot recommend Different enough!" (Shawna Wingert, author of Everyday Autism)

    Story
    "Inspiring, authentic and affirming"

As a young mom I found Sally and Clay Clarkson's books so helpful along my young family's path. Wholehearted Parenting and their homeschool ideas served me well as I navigated the early homeschool years with my "different" boy. I had no idea at the time how truly similar Sally and I were or how very much alike my sweet boy and her Nathan were wired. A decade later when this book crossed my Facebook feed I knew I would want to read it. It took a year before I made time to listen and as Nathan shared about himself in the intro I burst into tears. He was describing my son, who was deeply struggling with almost identical issues. Over and over as they shared I found myself related to Sally in a way only another mother of a different boy could. I burst into tears multiple times--tears of having words put to our story, of affirmation for choices we've made for our family along the way that others may not understand, of hope for my 16 year olds' future. Of gratitude for their openness in sharing things that so often carry such stigma. Nathan and Sally, I am so grateful to you for your sharing. I know all of us are different and these differences cause us to dig deep, live bigger, judge less and hold space and hope and faith more. Thank you for being our voice in what can be a very lonely, misunderstood, confusing path.

    Story
    "Practical Encouragement"

Listening to a grown up son who struggles with OCD and ADHD gave me hope for the future. I like that it is not a set of how tos as much as encouragement to keep on and that there is hope when you are struggling with fear that comes from being different. Sally was transparent about her struggles but has also found peace and victory along the way.

    Story
"there's a lump in my throat"

at first, i thought the book was interesting but was a little concerned at the mention of demons in the introduction. then as i lstened, it became apparent that nathan and his mom were clearly believers. the story grew on me as nathan told about his obvious desire to keep himself pure in this 'fallen world' to use his own terms (I completely agree with this term). i ached for his mom when she mentioned how unashamedly this world has put inappropriate images & literature in front of younger and younger children. all this, along with the beautiful ending where nathan has realized his dreams, makes for a testimony that i would recommend to any parent of a different child. nathan is the same age as my younger brother who had a terrible time in school because of ADHD and the stigma it evokes.
