Summary

"I am hopelessly divided between the dark and the good, the rebel and the saint, the sex maniac and the monk, the poet and the priest, the demagogue and the populist. Pen to paper, I've put it all down, every bit from the heart. I'm going out on a limb here, so watch my back." (Billy Idol)

An early architect of punk rock's sound, style, and fury, whose lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into pop's mainstream as one of MTV's first megastars, Billy Idol remains, to this day, a true rock 'n' roll icon. Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, Dancing with Myself, Idol delivers an electric, searingly honest account of his journey to fame - from his early days as front man of the pioneering UK punk band Generation X to the decadent life atop the dance-rock kingdom he ruled - delivered with the same in-your-face attitude and fire his fans have embraced for decades. Beyond adding his uniquely qualified perspective to the story of the evolution of rock, Idol is a brash, lively chronicler of his own career. A survivor's tale at its heart, this sometimes chilling and always riveting account of one man's creative drive joining forces with unbridled human desire is unmistakably literary in its character and brave in its sheer willingness to tell. With it, Billy Idol is destined to emerge as one of the great writers among his musical peers.

Billy's story in his own words.

Love that this is Billy's story in his own words. What a life. Oh to have stepped into his shoes for just one night in his Rebel Yell days (c.1984), at the hedonistic height of his career.

Personal, heart warming and exciting.

Was really looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. Billy is a fabulous narrator and really put his heart and soul into writing this and reading it.

Fascinating. Well-written and narrated.

Billy Idol - I wanted to read his book because I'd always wondered how he'd survived and nothing more. Well, now I'm a total fan. Erudite and intelligent, Billy is fascinating to listen to and takes you on a real journey. His voice is perfect for the narration: deep, husky, intelligent and someone who has obviously lived the life. What a man! I was touched at the end when he thanked the reader/listener; I felt as though he was speaking to me. A well-rounded human being who is honest and who makes you feel that you are really getting to know him. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Truly articulate and honest. a beautiful listen. I'm pleased that Billy read it himself. I don't believe that anyone else could have read it like him! this is an amazing insight to his life.

Good read for fans

Narration was very good for saying it's not his day job. Carefully written and a compelling story makes for an enjoyable easy read. Some serious incidents included but had expected better examples of how his demeanour affected his career in some cases where every day blow ups are experienced by most people anyway.

As as fan, I'm so glad he did this and in his own way as it tied together a lot of history and gave further context to what was already known.

Truly excellent audiobook. Crazy and shocking!

Really enjoyed this audiobook. Billy Idol reads this book passionately and details very personal experiences which can be darn right crazy! What a wild character and life led. One of the best audiobooks Ive had the pleasure of listening to. Shame it's over. Well done Billy

Great bio, great narration by Idol

Really enjoyed this, pulls no punches, a great warts and all tale of madness, and an era long gone unfortunately

Brutal, joyful honesty.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book , especially more so because Billy himself reads it, giving it extra depth and vigour.
