Summary

What happens when a nineteen-year-old boy leaves home and heads into the jungles to evangelize a murderous tribe of South American Indians?

For Bruce Olson, it meant capture, disease, terror, loneliness, and torture. But what he discovered through trial and error has revolutionized the world of missions.

Bruchko, which has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, has been called "more fantastic and harrowing than anything Hollywood could concoct." Having lived with the Motilone Indians since1961, Olson has won the friendship of four presidents of Colombia and made appearances before the United Nations because of his efforts. Bruchko includes the story of Olson's1988 kidnapping by communist guerrillas and the nine months of captivity that followed. This revised version of his story is an amazing reminder that simple faith in Christ can make anything possible.

Excellent: sensitive Gospel communication

If you can tolerate the narrator you will love the story of a young man on God's mission with the message of his Son in the power of the Holy Spirit - couldn't put it down it was so exciting. It's a great example of picking up your cross daily that parallels Jesus leaving Heaven to live amongst us so that he could communicate with us as it says in Hebrews 1:

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Bruchko finds that the tribe God calls him to are seeking God and, rather like Cornelius in Acts 10, has told them to expect a man who will tell them how to get reconciled with God.

His sensitivity to working within their culture is wonderful to see an the results speak for themselves. You can hear Bruchko himself on Youtube but this book is one not to be missed.

Inspiring!

This is an amazing story of how God can use one person to impact a nation. He had his own connection with God and chose to listen to Him instead of listening to a missionary group who had lost sight of their true mission.
Although I know I am not called to travel deep into the jungles of any country to bring the message of Jesus, I am inspired to seek God in how He wants to use me to bring His love, compassion, and mercy to the lost.

I highly recommend this book!!!

If you are interested in missions, read this!

Such a faith building, encouraging story!

Fabulous book! I didn't like the narration for the first several chapters... but as the story went in, it got better (or I was so enthralled with the story it stopped bothering me).

THIS BOOK MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON ME

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES, I already have recommended this book. This is a very powerful and inspirational book.

What other book might you compare Bruchko to and why?

i DARED TO CALL HIM FATHER. Which I also enjoyed. These are both autobiographies in which both people dared to be submitted to God, and love the people group they were in.

Which character – as performed by Gary Dikeos – was your favorite?

Bobby and also Brucho

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, this book made me laugh and cry. It had surprising turns and twists in the story.

Good story. Voice acting was hard to listen to.

The story was good, but the voice acting was hard to hear. I am sure finding someone to pronounce all of the names and words was not easy.

this is a great read for any of those thinking or questioning how closely they are following the Lord. It challenges our perspective on calling,. hearing from God and our own obedience

Beautiful

That's the word that comes to mind when I try to tell people about this story. Bruce never pushed Western ideas on the indigenous Indian tribes in Colombia and Venezuela. He was incredibly sensitive to their culture and approached his evangelistic purpose with great care. It took years of living with these people to understand them to the point where he could share the gospel and he endured tremendous peril for them. Excellent faithful service.

The reader is a bit stilted in his speech. It seems like he is overly emphatic and it is a little distracting. That's why I gave 3 stars for performance.

Incredible story

And a true story. You will not regret listening. Better then any Hollywood fiction. Bruce Olson, 19 years old, gifted in linguistics, was called (by God) to South America to share the Gospel with the Indians. He literally leaves Illinois with only a few dollars in his pocket and a promise of a place to stay. The promise of a place to stay evaporated and he was on his own...except for God. Bruce Olson, a lanky, intelligent, bookish teenager, ended up living with the murderous tribe of the Motoloni and brought TRUE Christianity to them. He helped them develop their own written language, schools and health centers were started and lawyers, doctors, nurses, farmers, teachers and of course Christians can be counted among the indigenous peoples of Columbia because Bruce Olson was obedient to Christ.

Great Story!!!

Initially the book seems very simple in how it is written almost like a children's book. Once your through the first few chapters it gets better, and become extremely interesting to the point I was unable to put it down! I would highly recommend this book!

Great Witness

What a special witness of God’s work to prepare a people for his kingdom on earth and for heaven.
