Summary
For a young Mike Pannett, growing up in North Yorkshire in the late 1960s and early '70s was a dream come true. They really were the good old days. The summer holidays lasted forever and the sun always seemed to shine. Given a fishing rod, a bottle of pop and a jam sandwich, a lad could wander as far as his bike would take him, and the countryside was one big adventure playground. Like many a boy, however, Mike learns things the hard way. A bike ride lands him in the hospital and a fishing trip almost ends with a shipwreck. Mike’s a likely lad and these are his tales.

Dreadful narration!
Really looked forward to listening to this as it was set around an area I know well. I couldn't get past the first chapter it was like listening to an eight year old reading a school book. Pauses in the middle of sentences and a toneless voice with no enthusiasm for the story at all. Dreadful.

How a writer can spoil a book
The story line had such potential. I was in a state of excitement waiting to sit back and be transported to the time of my own childhood and then like a rolled up parcel of week old fish "n" chips it hit.The most boring and lifeless sound I have had the misfortune to hear, the authors voice, it made me cringe thinking I had wasted a credit on such a dull,lifeless and poor narration of his written work. Who ever allowed him to do it should be banished from the halls of all written work and made to do the washing up until he has atoned for his extreme misjudgment. In future I will believe the star ratings left by others.

Dreadful narration.
Was so looking forward to this book as it is exactly the kind of thing that I love to read (or have read to me.) Did the author really live the story? If so, I don’t think that he enjoyed his childhood very much at all. So saying, I didn’t enjoy his childhood either, two chapters was all we could manage. We chose the book to listen to as we drove the long distance to our holiday destination. So glad we didn’t let it set the mood for our week away.

worth reading but not listening
Although when I've read the books I have enjoyed them unfortunately Mike Pannett is not the best narrator.
