Summary

Mankind is no longer the dominant species.

When Harrison Kent suggests an outing to a remote campsite in Colorado, his friends are all eager for a few days of fun and adventure. What awaits them, though, is far more than they ever bargained for.

They learn that Sasquatch is real, but these are not the shy creatures of legend. A madness has claimed them, erasing their once peaceful nature and leaving in its wake a rampaging horde of monsters that's about to descend upon the unsuspecting residents of a remote town.

But the woods hold more than one secret. The cast of a low-budget reality show is filming in the area, and they have information that could even the odds. Harrison and his friends will need to team up with them for one desperate last stand, otherwise humanity could find itself back at the bottom of the food chain.

Good fun but............

Hopefully author's read the feedback on Audible. Many horror writers have fallen into the trap of thinking that every scenario needs to be worst case. It doesn't, it just adds frustration as a reader/listener and R. Gualtieri needs to think hard about that. "but", "just as" and "however" need to be used a lot less. IMO, a lot of time the the good guy/gal just getting a quick, satisfying drop on the bad guys or monster is far more satisfying than "he pulled the trigger and there was a click"... or "she was sneaking up quietly, but stepped on a branch and alerted her target". This type of thing doesn't need to happen in every confrontation scene. Book 2, Devil Hunters, is even worse for this. I've found myself sitting there shouting "just pull the damned trigger ffs!!!!!" Every scenario is overly complicated and drawn out to create tension, but its just frustrating and annoying, which is disappointing because overall the books are very good and the storylines are exciting. Derek, Danni and Mitchell are great characters, but the author needs less thinking, second guessing and hand wringing and more action.

No spoilers but great Cryptid Horror

The general pace of the story was solid, slow moments had enough details to be appreciated in hindsight and the action and horror hit fast and well. Although some events seemed predictable it may just be because I know enough about storytelling to see a formula in each tale. The characters were created on the trot and offered enough detail to care about outcomes; on the subject of which, there were very few certainties by the end. The narration was excellent, good emotive speech and not robotic (a reason I binned a different audible for this), maybe sometimes a bit breathy but that may just be the accent. I would recommend to anyone who’s a fan of Cryptid lore and the darker outcomes that are possible.
