Summary

When the war finally ended in May 1945, Lieutenant Danny McClain made good on his promise to come back for Anya in Holland. He expected her to put up a fight but instead found her exhausted and utterly broken. Maybe it was unfair, asking her to marry him when she was so vulnerable. But this much he knew: He would spend a lifetime helping to make her whole again.

The war had taken everything from Anya - her family, her friends, her home, her faith. She clung to the walls she'd fortressed around her heart, but what future did she have apart from Danny? At least she wouldn't be alone anymore. Or so she thought. When the American troops demobilize, Danny is sent home, forced to leave Anya behind in England. There she must wait with the other 70,000 war brides for passage to America. As England picks up the pieces of the war's debris in the months that follow, Anya shares a flat with three other war brides in London and rediscovers the healing bond of friendships.

Once again Danny and Anya find themselves oceans apart, their marriage confined to little more than the handwritten pages of their letters while wondering if the shadow of war will ever diminish.

Relevant WW2 story

Too much fluff with numerous chapters that could be skipped over without missing any of the story line. Very tedious to get through in areas.

Boring - I gave up

I enjoyed the first book in series very much. So i kept on slogging through this but after 250 pages i gave up. The book can be summed up in one word BORING. No plot. So my advice buy the first book in the series and enjoy. Then quit while you're ahead. Don't bother with the rest of the series.

Excellent sequel.

I loved this book even more than the first. It made my mother’s life come alive. She didn’t talk much about her wait to come to America as a War Bride, or the journey over. This put me in her shoes.

No plot, incredibly boring, very disappointing

I have never taken the time to review a book before, but this one was such a huge disappointment that I felt almost obligated to warn others. There is no plot to the story. I kept waiting and waiting for a plot to develop, while suffering through details and minutia about every inning of several baseball games. I could hardly believe the author would continue with such incredible detail about EACH inning of the baseball games. Then there were little side stories that popped up but never developed or tied into the main story, almost as if it was just a flight of ideas. I rented this one because the first one had been pretty good and I hoped for the same quality in the sequel. Instead, it was a complete waste of money/credit.

Wonderful story!

The characters were interesting and believable. I really liked all the historical details that gave me a glimpse at what it would have been like at that time.
I think anyone who likes history would appreciate listening to this book. There is romance but no objectionable details. The narrator did an excellent job of portraying both men and women, some with different accents, and conveying their emotions as well as their words. I would highly recommend this book.
