Personally I found the pacing too slow for my liking, but I do think that the story needs to be heard. This story was dealt with in a careful and considerate manner.

This book definitely has a thriller vibe as you follow Special Agent Scott Hansen investigations into the disappearance into the murders of innocent indigenous women in Alaska. I will point out you are not following the man hunt, as the perpetrator has already been captured, but this book cleverly focuses on the humanitarian side of the investigation of both the victims & murderers families & the political side of how the system fails these women.
This book will pull on your heart-strings with is raw & realistic narrative, drawing on real events gives the plotline that extra dimension, whilst being written beautifully & with respect. You do have a sub-plot of romance, but I it doesn't over-power the main focus of the book, but helped give light to the storyline, which could have been 'dark' considering the subject matter.
The narration on the audiobook I found suited the overall vibe of the book, which drew you further into the story until you are fully immersed in this brutal Alaskan world. Christine is a well versed actor / narrator & this definitely shows in how she portrays the emotive side of the characters, the confusion the repulsion & anxiety all with great timing & flow.
Overall, A great listen that brings focus to the plight of these women & families, their struggles & the barriers they experience. It also was an education as I personally wasn't aware of this situation in the world.

Temperance Hale’s entire world collapses when the FBI comes for her father, a respected bush pilot who is suddenly connected to a series of cold cases involving Indigenous women who disappeared across Alaska. In an instant, everything she believed about her childhood, her family and the man who raised her is thrown into question.
I found Temperance’s perspective particularly compelling. There’s something incredibly disturbing about imagining what it would feel like to discover that someone you loved and trusted could have been responsible for unimaginable things. Her struggle with guilt, grief, anger and the question of how much of her father’s legacy belongs to her gave the story a strong emotional core.
Special Agent Scott Hansen’s side of the story was equally impactful, particularly as the investigation becomes about identifying remains, restoring names and finally giving answers to families who had spent years waiting to be heard. I appreciated that the book doesn’t simply concentrate on one man’s crimes but looks at the wider failures that allowed women to disappear without receiving the attention or justice they deserved.
Listening to this as an audiobook added another layer to the experience. The narration suited the sombre, reflective nature of the story and made some of the more emotional moments particularly affecting. This isn’t necessarily a fast, twist-every-chapter thriller; it feels much more interested in the human cost of what happened, and I think that distinction is important.
There were moments where the pacing felt a little slower than I personally prefer, but the subject matter and emotional depth kept me invested.
A haunting and thought-provoking story about memory, family, accountability and the terrible cost of silence.

It hit hard without being too heavy, while raising real problems and dealing with lots of inadequate support from the very authorities we are supposed to depend on.
It is brilliantly written and I am so pleased I read/listened to this book. It will be a book I recommend to friends and families to read and they will all be shocked as this is very much outside of my usual genre and I absolutely don't regret the detour at all.
You truly need to read this book.
