Summary

One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.

Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

Horrible narration spoiled story

The narration felt like I was listening to a children’s story as it was so over the top. It really spoiled the enjoyment - the intonation was so unnatural.

A little cliched

The book is high paced with lots of action. However many of the plot elements are predictable and the novel feels cliched. I never got to care about the protagonist just watched him do expected things.

not the best

the end was really good but I felt like it dragged a bit. I struggled to finish and I usually don't. The narration wasnt the best either...the woman either sounded like a transsexual or little girls

A good story, somewhat let down by the narration.

Great story, good characters, the story was told at pace with a good twist at the end.
Did not enjoy the narration. The accents were jarring with an unmistakable trans Atlantic over tone.

it sounded like Jeffery and Bungle in Rainbow

luckily there's a much better narrator for the rest of the series.
perhaps this one should be redone.

Not what I was expecting

A step away from a crime drama, still involving police force characters, but from a diffetent angle.. Liked the narrator & the plot was excellent. Be intetesting to see if this is the start of s series, be nice if it is.

Great story.... narration is akin to a robot!

loved the story, the narrator spoiled it for me though! it's like listening to that annoying tiktok voice over! However, I'm glad I preserved! I'm hoping the change in narrator for the next book in the series is an improvement!

Matt Ballard book 1

After reading the reviews I decided to take a chance listening to this book. The reviews were not wrong, the narrator did ruin it some what with his attempts at some accents. Which also brings me to the topic as I do not review very often, I have listened firstly to “Jackman and Evans” which I thought had been narrated very well and then onto “Nikki Gallina” with a different narrator how certain characters had different accents, which ruined it all slightly. This book has a very good story line but ruined it more so by the way it was read. I have noticed that the next book in the series has a different narrator so I am hopeful it will improve, this possible proves that the author had read the reviews and decided to change the narrator on the next book. Overall I have enjoyed Joy Ellis’s books so I am looking forward to listening to the next in the series.

Disappointing from a favourite author

Love the Jackman Evans series so was hopeful. The narrator was okay but some of the characters, especially the women, seemed clipped and lacked any warmth. The attempt at a Geordie accent was bad, with it sounding a cross between Cornish and Scottish. But most of all I found the story lacking: crime stories where the police team become the target has been done to death. Overall disappointing and looking forward to starting The Patient Man next!
