About this listen

A mother will do anything to save her child, no matter the cost.

After her daughter is kidnapped, Emmeline Highclere—a thirty-four-year-old mother living in isolation with memories and grief her only companion—must do everything in her limited power and divine abilities to get the girl back.

Emmeline believes her daughter, Elora, is the Beloved—the conduit with goddess-granted divine abilities prophesied to bring peace to the Three Kingdoms. Because the last person thought to be the Beloved was brutally murdered by the enemy kingdom of Folterra, Emmeline has dedicated the last sixteen years to hiding her daughter and keeping her safe. When Elora is kidnapped by a Folterran prince, Emmeline must leave her place of hiding, resolving to do anything to rescue her daughter. But to have any chance against those who took the girl, Emmeline must call upon one of the most powerful conduits in the Three Kingdoms, the Crown Prince of Vesta—the man who broke her heart—and hope he helps her despite their estrangement.

With the weight of his father’s impending death hanging over his head, Crown Prince Rainier has begun to make moves to prove his dedication to assume the role of king. When he is visiting the estate that was once a second home to him, the woman who has long haunted his dreams and consumed his thoughts appears before him, asking for his help to find the child she had with another man. Now, he must decide: does he drop what he is doing to help Emmeline, or does he maintain his unwavering duty to the Crown?

Now, Emmeline and Rainier must work together to find the Beloved—to save the girl from the Folterrans and fulfill the prophecy of peace—while they both battle feelings of remorse, grief, and heartbreak, trying to ignore the heated desire and simmering attraction between them that never left.

Between Wrath and Mercy is book one of The Divine Between series. It contains explicit content and dark elements, including mature language, violence, and sexual content, and it ends on a cliffhanger.

I honestly couldn’t get into Em as a main character. She’s probably one of the dullest female leads I’ve read in a while. Her constant “What if, what if” internal monologues dragged on endlessly, and yet, whenever it came to making an actually reckless or stupid decision, she never once stopped to question herself. The inconsistency was frustrating.

What bothered me most was how she kept piling up reasons for why she and her soulmate couldn’t be together — almost like she wanted to convince herself more than him — and still, the moment another woman so much as looked at him, she was burning with jealousy. That double standard got tiring very quickly.

After a while, I started skipping whole sections of her inner monologues because they all felt repetitive and added nothing new. Instead of making me empathize with her, they just made her come across as whiny and indecisive.

Overall, the story is ok, but Em as a character really dragged it down for me.

Once again, irritating FMC

I found certain parts slightly questionable but at the same time this is a romance book so I get that needed to be a strong part of the story away from the other stuff! (Trying to not spoil things here!) over all enjoyed it and got very invested in the characters and their different stories/histories, bravo etc

Up and down in pace but a real adventure!

I really wanted to like this book, specially after so many amazing reviews, but unfortunately I just couldn't get into it. I really disliked the fmc, and the miscommunication trope didn't do her any favours either. I read a ton of other books in between chapters as I didn't want t to dnf but wasn't fully engaged in the story either. The spice was a bit boring and a weird kind of slow burn. The romance was very frustrating.
Saying that, the last 25% of the book was really good and a great battle and a major cliffhanger too.
The reason I gave 3 🌟 is that I think the problem with this one was me, I just didn't connect with the story enough to be invested in it all.
The narration was really good, and I will listen to the be t book as I bought both before I started this one.

Just couldnt get into it 😬

Finally found a fantasy book that is well written and narrated.
It seems this author may be a bit more mature, because there is more depth to the writing, and less mistakes. The FMC isn’t annoying and bratty, and the ‘love’ scenes aren’t eye rolling likes so many are. I could have done with slightly less self deprecation and introspection, it got to be annoying hearing how she didn’t feel enough over and over. I got it the first and second time.
The narration is in their own accents, so it flows well.
The story is captivating, and as there was a warning that it ends on a cliffhanger, I wasn’t as bothered as I usually am, that there was no closure to this part of the story at the end, and for the first time I’m prepared to buy book 2. I would have given 4.5 stars, it feels a bit more than a 4, but it’s not quite a 5 for me.

Good enough to buy book 2

Cartland type bodice ripper in a different format. Most grateful free under membership. Clearly free to entice bodice ripper fans to pay for 2nd volume. it simply was not good enough ro be in anyway enticing.
