Summary
Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white.
While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king. War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular - a shade too popular for her employer's taste.
Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

New recording
This book was originally sold with a change of narrator from the First Law books however the publisher has taken note and re-recorded this title and the following book with Steven Pacey. If you bought this with the other narrator you can re-download the title and it will be the new version with Steven Pacey. Excellant news given his brilliant performance.

not for the faint hearted
best book I've ever read of this genre probably. But because someone somehow managed to miss it, I'll say this: if you need to have good people in a story to enjoy it, or if you dislike gore stay well away.

Another excellent book by the greatest of authors
Amazing story, character development, action, and the narrator tells it perfectly making it both tense and funny at the same time.

Gripped
I was gripped by how wonderfully elaborate the storyline is. He writes so fluidly and so richly. But the main reason this book is so good is because it is performed magnificently. I listened for hours at a time and couldn't wait till the next time I would get chance to listen again. Loved it.

Dark, Bleak... and Bloody.
Despite this being a standalone release, the echoes of The First Law resound within it. A great take of revenge, if your tastes lean towards the nihilistic and barren. Heroes bereft of even a sliver of heroic sentament. You will find no redemptions here. Only dark characters, slipping deeper into the black void, blood-soaked, adorned with a necklace of vipers.

Engaging, gritty story
I enjoyed this as much as the first 3, a dark story with no heroes but many interesting and colourful characters in a wonderfully paced story. Voice actor Steven Pacey is an amazing talent, likely the best audible narrator I've heard with a bottomless well of different voices. Highly recommended.
