Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait. It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

A Compelling Read!
I received this book via a promo code and this is my honest voluntary review.
Answering seasonal Christmas phone calls from your Ex never ends well but for prize winning journalist Jessica, this is more than just a regret-fuelled hangover. There's limited information that I can share regarding how that distressed call from Toni ended without giving out spoilers but I can assure you that this book can be enjoyed as a standalone as it follows a different set of survivors and runs parallel to the events happening with Logan, Cassie and their group in book one.
If I had been impressed with this saga in book one, then book two has completely blown it out of the zombie infested waters.
I am now eagerly awaiting the release of Book 3- After the End to see what next becomes of Jessica and Alex after successfully completing their mission to get the news out as we observed from Logan's POV at the end of book one.
November 27th can't come soon enough!

The Truth Must Be Told Whatever The Cost
I really enjoyed how the story was written in the POV of a reporter and took us back to "Before The End".
Although the story is book 2, it's actually a prequel and can be read as a stand alone.
Jess is a great character, she's hardcore with heart. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to punch her partner in the throat!!
Thank you for writing a book that pulled me in from the first page and wouldn't let go until the very last word. Descriptive without being too wordy, I love a book I can imagine in my head as I read and this one played like a movie!

Total Game Changer!
So, in book one, we mostly follow Logan, who has come into the zombie apocalypse while on vacation in southern England. In this book, we start at the beginning with Jessica, who is a reporter, trying to figure out a cryptic phone call from her ex. Same timeline as book one, but from a completely different viewpoint. At the end of book one, you see the moment Logan first sees Jess and the news van. I never expected her misadventures would be even crazier than his! And SOOO much darker. I've already started book three, which takes it up ANOTHER notch. So far, they might still get containment, or at least a vaccine or cure, which sort of makes our current pandemic seem mild by comparison. I mean, hey, we aren't trying to eat each other... Yet...

Excellent Story
I loved this story. The characters are great. We find out how the virus started, and why. It is all tangled up in a relationship that our main character has tried to avoid, but when here ex calls her, she runs to the rescue. Then everything falls apart and our main character tries to warn others about what is going on. I was glued to my seat and sucking in my breath at every turn. The narrator does an excellent job at bring the book to life. I would recommend listening to this book.

did two different authors write these books?
I tried to like it. I loved the first audio book and was eager to get into the second. I feel like the author decided to write an entirely different style book.
Not sure why the series decided to make a turn in a different direction? This was more about two ex lovers as the navigate their past relationship and how toxic it was; and oh by the way there were zombies too?
I tried to get into it; actually got about 4 hours into the 12 hour book and kinda lost interest in them. I returned it.
I guess I wanted more zombies and less bad relationship drama. It wasn't bad, just not for me.

Really good take on how it all began
I enjoyed the story for the most part. GJ Stevens description of how it all started is a new one for me. At times it seemed to be a story of a dysfunctional relationship more than the beginning of the Zombie pandemic. Sarah Kempton did a good job but it was like she put such emphasis on the first word of every sentence and then read normal. Like JESS thought to herself, "IF only I had known what Toni was doing. THEN I could have done something about it. BUT how was I to know?"s Other than that, she did great. Very pleasant voice. I will be sure to pick up Book 3.

Great story! Long Story!
This was overall a good storyline..it just seemed to drag on a bit. I think it was SO descriptive it was too descriptive..Like by the time Jess was through describing someone's features...or what the doorway looked like...or how the van looked on the outside...I was ready to move on long before then. I love the storyline and premise...just a bit drawn out for me. The narration is quite perfect!
