Summary

This revised edition includes a new epilogue, "Coming up on Twenty-Five Years" since the entry of the Evangelical Orthodox into the Holy Orthodox Church. This is the story of a handful of courageous men and their congregations who risked stable occupations, security and the approval of life-long friends to be obedient to God's call. It is also the story of every believer who is searching for the Church. Where Christ is Lord. Where holiness, human responsibility, and the sovereignty of God are preached. Where fellowship is more than a covered-dish supper in the church basement. And where fads and fashions take a backseat to apostolic worship and doctrine. This is a book, for Orthodox Christians, looking for ways to bring new life to their own Churches. It's also a book for those completely dissatisfied - those on their own search. And it's a book for Orthodox Christians, looking for renewal.

Very moving

An account of how a Protestant pastor and his colleagues came to the Orthodox Church as the end of their search for the true Christian faith. One of the best Christian books I have listened to. Highly recommended.

Compelling Story

So great to hear Fr Peter's warm voice. We miss him. The history is well told, and even after having read the entire book 13 years ago we found it still or again fascinating. The epilog was especially rich, but don't skip straight to it—the rest of the book builds to make the end profound.

Inspiring and Informative

I am an evangelical who has also recently developed an interest in Orthodoxy. Fr. Gilquist's story was really fascinating and inspiring. At first, I was a little distracted by his reading style because you can tell he is not a professional narrator and it feels like you are being read to. But by the middle of the book I was used to his style, and by the end I came to find his voice very friendly and encouraging. I highly recommend this book to evangelicals who are interested in Orthodoxy. He directly addresses all the doctrinal points that evangelicals will be wondering about, and makes a compelling case for the Orthodox view. This book has inspired me to pursue further study.

Good Story: Thoughtful and Cronological

I listened to the book in a few sittings while working. It is difficult to find Orthodox conversion stories from Americans and it fills an entry level niche.

A story of the journey…

Growing up in a protestant and evangelical background this book resonated with me. It perfectly describes the journey I went through from my childhood. The stories reflected the yearning and the searching for the truth church. But also expressed the victories in the struggles. Hearing the stories from the authors perspective and in the authors own voice helps to capture the specialness of this book. I love you dad! Greg

Great!

Thank you for putting this book together and reading it. Though I've had many of the questions you've answered in this book answered already, I appreciate this book and it's story all the same. It's funny to see that all those questions were ones that I had also asked.

I'm Baptist looking for answers

As stated by another reviewer, the style the reader is as if one is reading a in a natural voice, without a ton of inflection. However you do feel the emotion and enthusiasm of the author/reader and his passion comes through. This book answered many questions for me and allowed me to see that I am not alone in my quest for authenticity of faith and the original Church. I pray that anyone reading will receive the blessing that I have.

the book that brought me to the church

this is the book that actually brought me to Orthodoxy. And being able to listen to it actually read by Father Peter gillquist was incredible. I highly recommend this book to anyone is seeking Orthodoxy and has questions especially if they are not familiar with the Orthodox Church.

Amazing Story of Coming Closer to Christ

This story really resonated with me, being someone who is early on my spiritual journey and leaning very heavily towards Orthodox Christianity. Anyone on their spiritual journey should definitely listen to this.
