Summary

In Becoming Enlightened, His Holiness the Dalai Lama powerfully explores the foundation of Buddhism, laying out an accessible and practical approach to age-old questions: How can we live free from suffering? How can we achieve lasting happiness and peace?

Drawing from traditional Buddhist meditative practices as well as penetrating examples from today's troubled planet, he presents step-by-step exercises designed to expand our capacity for spiritual growth, along with clear milestones to mark our progress. By following the spiritual practices outlined in Becoming Enlightened, we can learn how to replace troublesome feelings with positive attitudes and embark on a path to achieving an exalted state - within ourselves and within the larger world.

Full of personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's experiences as a life-long student, thinker, political leader, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Becoming Enlightened is a remarkable and empowering work that can be enjoyed by seekers of all faiths, at every stage of spiritual development.

Such fascinating information so tediously read

I am about a third of the way through this and while I find the subject insightful and interesting I am struggling to go any further. What made Jeffrey Hopkins think he should narrate this, it really isn't something he's remotely good at. Monotonous at best. If I were asked to read out instructions on how to change a plug and it went on for 9 hours it may well sound as engaging as this....wish I'd bought the book instead.

Great Spiritual Guide

This is an amazing book. It think it was well presented and a valuable spiritual tool. It is not for the beginer though. Be aware that it is full of spiritual advise and knowledge but it may be advanced for the beginer. I loved it!

As always excellent material from His Holiness the Dali Llama

Great book for anyone wanting a concise understanding of the essentials of Buddhism. An easy read but should not be neglected and one would be wise to review the material.

Not for a beginner

I had bought this book based on my desire to learn more about His Holiness. I am not familiar with him nor am I familiar with his teachings. I found this books lesson a bit too advanced (far reaching) for me as I have no foundation or connection with his teachings. For someone who is familiar with the teachings or is engage with this religion, then it may be a good book. Further, the author/reader brings nothing to the book. If the reader intended to be boring and uninspiring, then he succeeds. I struggled to listen partly because of the monotone readings. Again, if this was the readers intent in collaboration with the style of teachings, then he succeeded.
If you are in tune with the Holiness, its probably a great book. But if this will be your first experience, I suggest another book read by another narrator.

Great book

This book was very interesting but the narrator was awful! I stopped listening to the book because I was beyond bored with Jeffrey Hopkins. I will read the book instead of listening to it.
