Summary

Jenna is a victim of an attack on her college campus. After barely escaping, she manages to make her way to campus security. With the help of the security guard, the local police are called, but she soon learns no one will help her case, and the police and the college administration dismiss her accusation, leaving her feeling empty.

Tired of the whispers and looks from her classmates and professors, she decides to take charge of the situation. Tired of being a victim, she's determined to take her life back. Jenna soon undergoes a dramatic makeover...one that leaves even her best friend unable to recognize her. With her new look and the help of some online self-help videos, she begins her search for her attacker.

In her search, the one thing Jenna didn't expect to find was the handsome, new student, Nic. As she gets to know him, she learns he isn't who he claims to be. It's then Jenna begins to suspect the guy she's fallen for.

As she closes in on her attacker, she makes a few new discoveries, and she can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. As she races against time, will she be able to uncover the identity of her attacker before he strikes again?

Very good message

This book has a great message for women to be strong and never give up on yourself. Jenna could have become a victim of what happened to her but she re-invents herself and goes after finding vindication. She meets Nic who became an ally along with her best friend who assist her in finding her attacker. I almost gave up on the audiobook because of the narration. Carly was reading the book and not performing it. Which is how I hear an audiobook, I want to hear an actor performing. It was so faster read than it needed to be and so I slowed down the speed to 90% and it was better. I love how Elaine write suspenseful stories which showcase strong women overcoming difficulties they have endured. I was given this audiobook at my request and this is my opinion only. Great writing and story line but had issues with the narrator. Still amazing book because of the story.

Good, not great.

So let me start off by saying this was a different book than I'm used to.. That being said I had expectations, I might have set them too high but I was expecting more from this book than what was given. I enjoyed the story, it's hard not to enjoy a book for me but I didn't love it. It was too predictable and not as thrilling as i anticipated. Jenna uprooted her whole life to feel safe and even then it didn't work, changed her appearance and all. Nic is pretty obvious, you know right away who and what he is. When things go haywire it's clear how things are going to play out. I just didn't care for the obviousness of the book. I wanted more of the element of surprise and less predictability. The narrator did a good job, again just good not great. She didn't put enough feeling into the book, it felt like she was just reading words off a page instead of making the characters come alive.

He shouldn’t have

Mystery, suspense, intrigue, a crime is committed, but the perpetrator is not convicted and the victim takes it upon herself to right the wrong. I enjoyed this short story, but the narrator has bad inflection, so disappointing, this is my opinion.

Good Story!

Elaine Marie wrote a good story, with a good lesson to learn. She also gave us mystery and suspense around finding a perpetrator. We even experienced new romances that developed. The only problem with the book was, it felt like it was being read to me, but I would still recommend it to others. There's a lesson to be learned in the storyline for all women. #AudiobookObsessionReviewGroup🎧

Narration a bit rushed but good story

This is a story about overcoming fears and a horrible experience. Jenna was attacked at school and no one helped her so she got the strength to help herself. That was an awesome part of the story and I appreciated her strength. She meets another student Nic and they get along well although she knows he is hiding something. Can they come together to protect Jenna and overcome the horrible violence she has in her past? The narrator, Carly, sounded a bit rushed and she would have benefitted from some more emotion. She actually sounded best as the “bad guy” because it slowed down her narration and infused a bit of difference in her voice. However I had no problem finishing the book and enjoyed it overall. I received this book from #AudiobookObsession, #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

🎧AudiobookObsession🎧

This was a great story of finding your strength after having your power taken away. Jenna was attacked but instead of dwelling on the fear and depression- she finds the strength to remake herself and look for not just revenge but vindication. I enjoyed the story line very much. The narration was solid- I would have loved a bit more feeling/acting from the narrator but all in all, it was pretty good. 🎧AudiobookObsession🎧

Great suspenseful romance with a clever ending

This is a first time reading work from this author for me and I thought it was a promising start. The story was clever with suspense throughout and a clever twist as an ending. I loved Jenna and the fact that although she was insecure and frightened, she was intelligent and strong. It took me some time time to warm up to Nico as I felt he needed a bit more character development before the romance parts. Overall for a short listen this was a great story and definitely worth listening to. I think the narrator Carly needed to slow down and change her voice a bit more for Nico's parts as it was confusing at points who's part it was.

Strong Woman

I liked the storyline of this book, showing the strength and ability to overcome horror. It has suspense, romance and manipulation through fear. Elaine Marie's story was compelling. Carly read a bit fast paced for me and I felt myself wanting to take a breath for her. Whether I got used to it or she changed as the book went on it didn’t deter me from listening.

Because I can

This was an ok story. There was a good element of suspense. The story and narration moved kind of fast. I think that the story and characters could have been flushed out a bit more. I didn't really feel a connection between the characters or to the characters. What kept me engaged was wanting to solve the mystery of the attacks. I thought the narration was ok also. The narrator could have amped the story up with more emotion. At times the story felt flat and like the narrator was speed reading. Overall it was an ok read/listen

Very Empowering!

This book was empowering, and a little hard for me to swallow. The author knew how bad it can be to be for some, and how is deafening it can be to go through. That's all I'm going to say about the book! She is an amazing writer, and pulls you in, where you can feel each emotion being shown. And my favorite motto, she used in her book as well, knowing The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. This is the first book I have been able to listen to because I know how the character feels. Elaine Marie has many more books that I want to read and review. She has a fan now. I believe this is a wonderful book to read it empowers, encourages and shines a light to the ones that need to hear it.

empowerment

Jenna was attacked after staying late in classroom in college. All she could remember was him whispering in her ear, "Because I Can.". After the case was dismissed, she took it on her own to solve the mystery of her attacker. She changed her looks, name, demeanor. She became.a Badass Jen. This story shows how a quiet girl found the strength, and confidence to overcome the challenges of the nightmares of her attack. With the help of her best friend Amy, friends, James and Nico, they helped her in the investigation. This is a story of empowerment, doing what needed to be done to solve this and previous attacks. I enjoyed listening to this story. I was gifted this audio and offered my honest review.

Nic and Jenna

This was a story packed with all kinds of emotions. It involved a sexual assault on a college campus if that is a trigger. I think it was written well and I really enjoyed the story. Carly does a good job. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. AudiobookObsession AudiobooksUnleashed

short but impactful

Creepy, dark, and delicious! If you like dark romance, then this is for you. The author brings on the high anxiety with the addition of Nico and things escalate from there. Loved the ending. Karma. Loved the intrigue and cat and mouse games!! I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a great job.

Without the narrator, I would have liked it better

I wanted to like this book much more than I really did, but because of the narration, I almost gave up on it. The story follows Jenna, who’s been attacked on her campus, and who now lives in fear. The campus administration has abandoned her, the police too. Her only hope for justice is in her own hands. So she changes. She becomes someone else, running away from her old self. But you can’t outrun your fears. Despite her trauma, Jenna is a strong character, and I enjoyed that. She fights back. And she wants justice for her ‘sisters’, the other victims of her attacker. I also liked that there’s a love interest, and he’s an okay character, and he supports and comforts her, but in the end, she’s still the one who fights and wins. Jenna doesn’t need a man to fight in her stand. If it wasn’t for the narrator, I would have liked this book much better, I’m sure.

Fast Paced Romantic Suspense

Because I Can is the first book in this series but it is a stand-alone book. Read by Carly Lynne who changes speed throughout the story and had little emotional range for a highly emotional story. Jenna (Jen) is an A student dedicated to her studies. After staying late in her campus classroom one night, she is assaulted as she tries to leave the building. She barely escapes and gets help from campus security. After reporting it to the police and a half hearted investigation, the case is closed with no suspects. The campus administration say that she is just seeking attention. Feeling twice the victim, Jen falls into depression. Her bestie, Amy, tries to help her but she keeps spiraling downward. One day Jenna decides she is not willing to give up. She gets a total make over to the point that not even Amy recognizes her. She changes her name and enrolls in classes. Jen is determined to outsmart her assailant and seeks justice herself. She sets herself up as an easy victim trying to lure her assailant out. As her new persona, she meets Nic. At first he seems great, but he is watching her a little too much. What if he is the bad guy? Will she be able to escape her assailant twice? How deep does this campus/police cover-up go? Mystery and intrigue at every turn in this book will keep you guessing until the end.

My Two Pennies

Audiobook review: the narration was alright. I didn’t feel the separation between the characters often, but as I focused on the storyline itself I was captivated hearing now self empowered Jenna became and turned such a horrible event around. The lengths this woman took to find herself again as well as the person behind it all was what kept me wanting to know what and whom was involved.
