Scorio will rise from the ashes to conquer the 10 layers of hell.
Reborn without memories, Scorio learns that he is a Great Soul, a legendary defender of the ancient city of Bastion. That within the hallowed halls of the Academy and under the stern eyes of the underworld’s greatest instructors he will enjoy enormous privilege, rediscover unique and wondrous powers, and one day return to the millennium-old battle against their infernal foes.
Until he is betrayed. Singled out and sentenced to die for crimes he can't remember, Scorio is hurled to his doom - and forgotten.
But from even the dimmest spark an inferno may one day rage.
Clawing his way back from oblivion, Scorio vows to return to the Academy at any cost. To emerge from the ruins and within those golden walls defeat his elite classmates in a quest to ascend the ranks and change the course of history. For only then will he learn about his forgotten past and why his enemies have rightly feared him since the day he was reborn.

Nick P was a fantastic narrator, as he always is. Clear and unobtrusive to the enjoyment of the book.
Maybe a little long, but great story and narration

Slight spoiler;
When Scorio enters the first gauntlet there is an arrow trap.
When he enters the second its a blade.
I thought it would be different each time.
The Gauntlet is used to score their performance but then the trap repeats itself, memorizing the first trap doesnt feel like a very good test. I felt more excited when it seemed like the direction of the danger would come from different angles each time, and the true test was "be ready for danger when you step through a door", not "after the door, remember to take a step to the left".
The same way of thinking can be applied to most of the book, it builds a solid foundation of an interesting question about what will happen.
And then it feels the need to take the easiest answer.
Not all checkovs guns need to be cowboy six-shooters pointed at the heart of the hero just to click empty when the trigger is pulled.
Also the cover sadly spoiled the transformation.
It surprised me in a bad way
