There's only one way to stop it, but that involves something no one has ever managed before. With the aid of her shape-shifting pet seal, a rescued sailor, and the spirit of a man she can't even see, Mari ventures onto land for the first time in her life, determined to save the souls of her people.

But the land of men comes with many dangers, and not all her allies can be trusted. Can she restore what's been stolen and right the balance between land and sea once more? Or will she doom herself for eternity....

nice tales!

This is a cute variation on the story of the little mermaid. More myth and magic than normal! Nicely written story. Good narration.

Very different version of The Little Mermaid

This version was so different from the Disney version of The Little Mermaid that I actually wondered if there was a Brothers Grimm version that it was closer to. As far as I know, it's not. It's just a different imagining of a mermaid moving from the ocean to land. I've also listened to If The Shoe Fits by Laura Greenwood and I preferred that one, but Balances Scales is good too for a short story. Courtney Encheff's voice is good for Mari's character and gave it a young adult feel. #AudiobookObsession

Impressed

This is the longest of the authors' stories I've ever had and I've got to say I'm impressed! Chuck out everything you think you know about the Disney version - in this tale, she's a legend. I love that it's not a direct retelling, I enjoyed the world building - I found that naivety of the heroine frustrating, but it did fit with the character. A questing story where the romance is a bit on the back burner that ends happily ever after :) **Audio book obsession reviewer

Unique tale

The author has a great imagination and really comes up with unique story ideas. This audiobook is definitely another one of her unique creations. The Little Mermaid retelling is very different but still fascinating. You have to read it to believe it! The narrator did a great job on the voices. #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

Interesting take on the fairytale

This was such an interesting reinterpretation of the little mermaid, which is actually one of my favorite fairy tales. Mari saved a man and admitted she is a mermaid and as a result, she loses her soul. She goes on a quest to get her soul back (she transforms to a human and her pet seal, Shelbie, goes with her, transforms into a dog- how cute!). On the way, she meets two male figures (one is a ghost) and she needs to find out who is on her side and who is working against her. The romance is secondary and it is such a fun, imaginative story that I really enjoyed the whole story. I enjoyed Courtney Encheff's narration. The only thing is that I felt like her narration had multiple points where she was a bit halting so it wasn't as smooth a narration. However, overall, I think she did a great job. 🎧AudiobookObsession, AudiobookObsessionReviewer

Retelling Of The Little Mermaid

Balanced Scales by Laura Greenwood is a fairy tale retelling of The Little Mermaid that I listened to on audio narrated by Courtney Encheff. I just love Laura’s books! They always leave me begging for more. The story did end leaving me with some questions. So I would love to see more on this series but I know it was published as standalone. But a girl can always hope. Courtney did a great job on the narration. Her voice was perfect for Mari! I cannot wait to listen to other projects that she has worked on. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes YA, Fairy Tales, or a Sweet Romance.

Twisting Your Tail and Soul

This is an amazing retelling of the Little Mermaid story! Mari is a curious mermaid who comes across a sinking ship on her 18th birthday. She saves a human from the wreck and loses her soul in the process. After realizing that she has lost her soul, she - with her best friend, Shelbie - embarks on a journey to seek out the sea witch (not evil!), go on land, and find the souls of all the merpeople from the past. As she starts she meets a "ghost" named Aaron, who helps her start to find the souls. But not everything is as it seems, and Mari must figure out who to trust and how to save her people. As seen in so many past posts... I love Laura Greenwood's books! This is another fabulous book with exciting characters and an story that pulls you into a new world. This new telling definitely doesn't sound like your original Little Mermaid! Courtney Encheff was a great narrator! She keeps you in the story and has a beautiful voice and cadence :) I would recommend this story for anyone who loves fairy tales!! #AudiobookObsessionReviewer

Started off a little slow but improved as it went!

I enjoy listening to Laura’s audiobooks, especially when I am looking for a break from the long series or even books that are relatively long. Sometimes its nice to listen to a book over a couple lunch breaks. This one for me had a lot of potential but I think the narration brought it down for me honestly. If Laura had used some of her other narrators that I really enjoy, then I think this would have gotten 4 stars across the board. The storyline was cute and fun, I liked our MC’s friend Shelby and I liked the twist at the end where someone we had wanted to be a part of our MC’s life gets to have that chance. Not going to say more because I wont spoil it. I knew the plot within the first like 10-15 mins but that was ok, it was interesting to see how Laura took us there. The MC definitely played the whole “what are these human things” well haha. Sometimes she was a little too naive for my taste, but with the storyline it kinda comes par for the course. The narration I think really threw me for a loop. I had to stop the and come back to the book twice unfortunately. I really wanted to love the storyline but the narrator just got on my nerves with how long she was taking to say things and her inflections didnt always matchup. I had to put it on 1.3X speed to get her to a pace that would hold my attention. I think she could definitely improve on her male characters voices, which would help a lot with these stories that have multiple male parts that are critical to the story. I recommend almost all of Laura’s audiobooks, but this one wasnt my favorite. I definitely would recommend reading the story but this is an either you like it or dont kinda audiobook (solely from the narration). 🎧 Audiobook Obsession Reviewer 🎧

Interesting

with a Nancy drew vives, I found the heroine too irritating with her overly naive nature she felt unreal too me, some points where interesting but others I dragged and for this short was just not for me. narration was ok personally the narrator needs a partner for Male counterparts her voice is too feminine to force a male voice. audiobook Obsessions 🎧
