A motorway service station on the M1: dimly lit, run down, poorly supervised, flickering lights, dark corners; a favourite stopover for long-distance lorry drivers on their way up north from London. Behind it, a body is found in a ditch, that of a girl barely out of her teens. She appears to have no family, no friends, no connections anywhere. Other girls have gone missing in the vicinity and no one has stepped forward to claim them.

Wrong reader for this book

Summary
It is late at night on a notorious council estate in east London. A van - garishly painted with a grinning clown's face on the side - is being driven erratically. When the police pull over the driver to question him, they discover, inside the van, the body of a young woman.
A murder suspect . . . an arrest . . . a confession . . . A case done and dusted? But their suspect claims his victim is not his first, but his third.
Five years earlier, a 13-year-old girl disappeared in broad daylight on a busy London street. DCS James Langton headed the investigation and left no stone unturned. The fact that case was not solved has haunted him ever since. The enquiry has opened up again but, unable to lead it due to ill health, Langton brings in DCI Anna Travis. Meanwhile the murder team begins the laborious task of verifying the details of the confessions and uncovering the identity of the second victim.
And then the suspect changes his story. They know they have a murderer in custody - but is he a serial killer or just a compulsive liar?

Another good one from Lynda
I liked this book. Like another reviewer, I could really have done without the telephone conversations. Really hard to hear and brought nothing to the story. My only other gripe is the accent for Langton. Not sure I had him down as a northerner. I feel sure that in earlier books he was from the South. Continuity needs to be reviewed. But i would hate to give the impression that I didn't enjoy the book because I did.

Enjoyable, an easy listen
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I enjoyed listening to this book but it was fairly mundane. Easy to listen to. Would recommend it though if you want a fairly uncomplicated listen.
If you’ve listened to books by Lynda La Plante before, how does this one compare?
This was my first book by Lynda La Plant.
Would you be willing to try another one of Samantha Bond’s performances?
Enjoyed listening to Samantha Bond, lovely voice and did a good job of different characters voices.
Could you see Backlash being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Probably a TV series.
