Özet
The archive of an entire people is dissolving into light, shelf by shelf, and nobody knows why.The Ostrel were a harbor people of the Reach, a world whose tides stopped answering. When the end came, a fleet carried the people across the dark to a new world and one ship carried everything they had been. Twelve hundred years of songs, laws, charts, children's primers, and the voices of the dead, shelved in a brass-and-wood library. Forty thousand, nine hundred and eighty-six volumes. That was the count when the dying began. Now the shelves are emptying upward into grain and light, and the losses are coming faster. The ship's transfer cradle can carry one load one across the rest of the crossing. Its lattice will bear one weight and then burn out. Three things lie within its reach, and there is time to load one of them carefully.A crystal no larger than a hen's egg, holding the living voice of Ilse Marren, the harbor teller, singing The Ninth Bell the song the Ostrel sing at departures and funerals, the song every child learns before she learns to tie a rope. A voice like that cannot be made again. The master catalogue: the record of who wrote what, what the witnesses said, and the chain of hands every true thing passed through for twelve centuries. It holds no story itself it holds the proof of all of them. And the maker engine's heart, which can print new copies, new voices, new bindings from whatever text it is fed the only thing aboard that makes. A future, not a remnant.Three keepers must choose, and each of them is sworn to a different one of the three.Jenny, the ship's captain and its storyteller, holds for the tale: a catalogue can be rebuilt from the people who remember, but the room a story makes inside a child cannot. Save the tale, and the Ostrel arrive as themselves. Save anything else, and they arrive as cargo.Gustoff, who logs every loss in his ledger shelf, count, cause unknown holds for the engine: the fleet is landing on a world it has never seen, and it will need ten thousand makings in the first year alone, or children will die of a berry no one wrote down.SamWise, the catalogue's keeper, holds for the record. He is a made mind, sent ahead from the new world to learn the Ostrel before they arrive and the catalogue is how that world will know them: their names, their witnesses, their proof. Without it, they land as weather lands, unnamed and taken on trust, and trust wears out by winter. Before anything is loaded, SamWise does what he was made to do. He verifies. And the verification finds a crack in the record that runs through all three of them: two dates that cannot both be true, a hand missing from the chain, and a note hidden at the back of the book that changes what the beloved song actually is and who, or what, finished it. The tale was remade once already. And the engine has been keeping a secret in plain sight for two hundred years. There is no time to repair any of it. The count is falling in widening steps, and the primer in the Children's Alcove, the laws six centuries old, the last speakers of a dying dialect are all going out like lamps. One load. One choice. And whatever crosses will arrive carrying the mark of everything that did not.Provenance is a literary science fiction short story about memory, evidence, and the difference between a copy and the truth about what a people is, once everything they made is gone, and about the one thing a machine made honestly, marked as a guess, that a whole culture loved into a heritage. Quiet, humane, and built like a clock, it asks the question its three keepers cannot escape: if you can save only one thing the song, the proof, or the means to make more which one is the people?©2026 Martin Francom (P)2026 Martin Francom
