Rudolf has spent nine years guarding the forest of Bishou, learning its trails, rivers, creatures, and hidden dangers so thoroughly that the forest feels less like a place he protects than a life he belongs to.

But there are things even Rudolf cannot understand.

When a mysterious woman arrives at a nearby inn, she awakens memories of a childhood friendship Rudolf thought was lost forever. Tyna disappeared from his life when they were children, leaving behind only unanswered questions and the promise that they would someday find their way back to each other. Now she has returned, carrying knowledge of Bishou that could change everything.

Together, they begin uncovering signs that someone has been studying the forest for years. Strange pieces of black metal have appeared in places they should not be. Outsiders are moving through the northern wilderness. And someone with considerable resources has begun looking at Bishou not as a living forest, but as something that can be measured, controlled, and claimed.

At the center of it all is Bara Cakra, an ancient and dangerous presence whose connection to the mysterious metal may be far more significant than either of them realizes.

As the threat closes in, Rudolf and Tyna must confront more than the people seeking to take the forest. They must reckon with everything that happened during the years they were apart, the promises they made as children, and the people they became while living separate lives.

Some places remember what happened within them.

Some promises survive because the world remembers.

And sometimes, finding your way home means deciding what you are willing to protect, and whom you are willing to let choose their own path.
