D. P. From Tomorrow by Mack Reynolds takes the familiar newsroom comedy of wisecracking reporters and drops an impossible visitor into the middle of it. The staff of the Daily Star has an answer for nearly every question anyone can throw at them, so when a stranger claims to have escaped from another space-time continuum, they know exactly what to do: hear him out, enjoy the joke, and eventually send him away. Martin Cantine insists he comes from a world almost identical to theirs, except that his world is ten years ahead.

Cantine hasn’t crossed realities merely to escape. He has brought a warning about Gerald Twombly, a man destined to establish a ruthless dictatorship using technology that can turn ordinary communication and scientific tools into instruments of control. The reporters find the story ridiculous, and Twombly’s name hardly inspires terror. Besides, in a newsroom packed with people who seem to know something about everything, nobody has ever heard of him. Mack Reynolds builds the story around that confidence, then quietly asks how useful knowledge really is when the important fact arrives before anyone is prepared to believe it.

Dallas McCord “Mack” Reynolds was born in Corcoran, California, in 1917 and worked as a newspaper reporter and editor before establishing himself in science fiction. That newsroom experience gives D. P. From Tomorrow its fast dialogue and convincing newspaper atmosphere. The story first appeared in Orbit Science Fiction No. 1 in 1953 and was later included in the 1954 anthology Portals of Tomorrow. Reynolds began appearing in magazines such as Fantastic Adventures, Amazing Stories, Startling Stories, Galaxy Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Astounding Science Fiction. His books include The Case of the Little Green Men, Planetary Agent X, The Computer War, and the Joe Mauser stories
