A dutiful duke-in-waiting.
George Asquith knows exactly who he is. The future duke. The responsible heir. The man who will marry well and manage his estates with quiet competence.
He has built his entire life on fulfilling his duty. Ever since one terrible mistake taught him the cost of reaching for what he really wants. Now he shoulders his responsibilities without complaint and keeps his impossible desires locked away.
When George leaves his family estate to attend the lavish wedding of the man he once believed himself in love with, he is resigned to a few days of misery. But then Theo Caldwell turns up. Theo, who George desperately admired as a boy—and who only seemed to despise George in return.
Theo, who betrayed him.
A feckless pleasure-seeker.
As the younger son of a spendthrift aristocratic family, Theo Caldwell may have little fortune but at least he has his freedom.
After a lengthy stint abroad, seizing whatever pleasures came his way, Theo has returned to England to claim an unexpected inheritance—an inheritance he plans to sell off before returning to the Continent as soon as possible. But when Theo reluctantly attends a society wedding, his plans are thrown into disarray when George Asquith innocently stumbles upon his deepest and most dangerous secret.
The passionate encounter that follows should only have happened once—George resolved long ago to bury his desires, and Theo never beds the same man twice—but somehow Theo finds himself inviting George to go with him to the dilapidated estate he has inherited, and George finds himself accepting…

George attends a friend’s wedding and survives – barely. He imagined himself in love with the groom and now, watching the man marry, it’s a little much. Also, because George is a duke-in-waiting, his attendance is quite coveted. Then he sees Theo – the young man he crushed on in their school years – and he’s thrown back to an unhappy time in his life. Theo’s watching out for him, though, and the men survive the wedding.
Only to meet up again in a very interesting place. And wind up doing some very interesting things.
Theo, on impulse, invites Geoge to his new inheritance. He intends to sell the property and continue his profligate and decadent lifestyle.
George accepts.
They keep doing what they both said they wouldn’t. George falls for Theo a little more every day. Theo beds a man more than once.
Then they arrive at the estate, and things are not as they seem
Okay, I don’t want to give away too much. As each secret is revealed, I fell more and more in love with the story. I longed for Theo and George to get their heads out of their butts and work things out once and for all.
Well, it’s a Joanna Chambers romance, so I got my way!
Simon Goldhill is a delightfully talented narrator and he always performs brilliantly. The author and narrator make the perfect duo and I loved this book as much as the others. Prior reading not required – this stands on its own and is wonderful.
A touching story

So I haven't read any of the previous books in this series, and though I definitely plan to now, I didn't feel like this hindered my ability to enjoy this book whatsoever. I also don't often read historical romances, solely because the time period does make me sad as our mains are (obviously) never able to live their love out loud. Of course this is due to the time period, so I can also appreciate the happiness they are able to find within that framework. But I was in need of a bit of a shake-up in my reading and this was perfect for that.
I loved that though George was a bit standoffish towards Theo (for reasons Theo didnt know at first), Theo immediately jumps into the role of "protector" for George as he is having to sit through Ollie's wedding. I also love when an MC (Theo) is very anti-romance & relationships, but then doesnt want the other MC having any romantic (or phsycial) experiences with someone else that wont treat MC2 kindly or with the same respect that MC1 would. Also special shoutout for the "no kissing" MC who is always actually wanting them to kiss - its feet kicking delightful stuff folks!
A new favorite!

George and Theo were in school as young men together and in this story they are meeting again as adults.
George has been led to believe he has an undesirable personality. His friend Ollie has the selfish self-interest in keeping George as a friend and away from others. George attends Ollie's wedding where he reconnects with others he knows but it's not until George goes to a club that he really runs into Theo. There they have a very unusual meeting. After this the two are somewhat thrown together on a trip to Wales. There both men start a relationship that will change the course of both of their lives.
I really enjoyed the transformation of Theo as the story progressed and how easily George finds his place and future.
This is a heartwarming story and I really enjoyed it.
The narration by Simon Goldhill was perfect for these characters.
Entertaining

The sharp contrast between duty-bound George and uninhibited Theo fuels a rich, character-driven journey where resolving past misunderstandings leads to genuinely earned healing and mutual trust.
A standout Regency romance packed with warmth, emotional depth, and believable, hard-won healing. Reads smoothly both as a continuation of the Enlightenment world and as a standalone.
The narration was outstanding, full of emotion.
A slow-burn regency romance
