In the blink of an eye, his whole life changed. Now he's back in search of answers. But will the truth destroy him?

When seventeen-year-old Christian Bekker killed a poacher, he claimed it was self-defense. But the judge disagreed. He gave Christian a choice-go to prison or leave his home in South Africa and never return.

Years later, following his father's suicide, conservation director Dr. Christian Bekker uncovers a plea from the grave to find out what really happened on that fateful day more than twenty years ago. Suddenly, he's on a plane to Johannesburg, leaving behind his life in London in search of answers. Were his father's suspicions correct or the result of twenty years spent dreaming about what might have been?

All thoughts of staying under the radar disappear as his past plunges him into a world where the police and government officials conspire with criminals to exploit what remains of South Africa's wildlife. Soon he finds himself in the criminals' sights.

With a Harlan Coben meets Tony Park vibe, fans of action-packed adventure that delves into the depths of corruption, power, and greed will love Blood on the Veld, the first installment of award-winning author S.A. McLain's page-turning thriller series.

Was a bit daunted by number of chapters at start, but soon found out that they were short and that aided the story line. Learned a lot about wildlife poaching and corruption! First audiobook but narration was clear and intonation was good, the story and subject matter kept me well entertained to the end.

Gripping story well narrated

I really enjoyed this listen. The story was compelling, tackling wildlife trafficking, poaching, class differences and corruption in modern South Africa. It’s intricately constructed with a lot of characters. The narrator Kate Loretto is top notch, really bringing out the suspense and intrigue of the story. The nuanced accents she used for the different characters really helped me to follow the plot and distinguish the different characters. Highly recommended!

From the start you feel the suspense. Action and mystery. This book will have you getting whiplash and holding your breath.
Poaching, the cruel mess of trade in animal parts. Corruption, mystery, reconnections. Hold on to your hats and if you find yourself holding your breath, you have been warned.
