Joanna, beautiful and other-worldly, finds herself trapped with her consumptive husband and two girls on a small farm in North Yorkshire. Ground down by local prejudice, her husband’s bitter despair and the merciless demands of their loss-making farm, Joanna escapes into a fantasy world of exotic islands, faraway cities—and Sir Walter Raleigh. Her journey through trial and tragedy however leads to a hopeful and uplifting conclusion.

Winifred Holtby’s wry wit, social commentary and acute observation illuminates and elevates this touching story. Written before her better known work South Riding, Holtby’s consummate skill as an author is in its first bloom.

From producer Justin Hill comes the first unabridged audiobook adaptation of The Land Of Green Ginger. Award-winning narrator Clive Hayward gives a powerhouse performance, ably assisted by Lucy Scott.

A fine production indeed of a tragic but ultimately hopeful tale where dreams clash with reality. Clever social commentary. Skilfully narrated.

Outstandingly produced & narrated

Winifred Holtby was an incredible writer and The Land Of Green Ginger deserves to be more widely known. It's a great tale, with moments of humour, melodrama, tragedy and hope. Narrators Clive Hayward and Lucy Scott make a fantastic team and really bring the story to life. As usual with The Other Operation, the sound quality is flawless.
