The last survivors. The last chance. The last leap through time...

In a crumbling biodome surrounded by endless seas and swarms of microdrones, humanity’s last survivors cling to hope. For Isabel, a dying scientist, and Diego, the man she loves, time is running out—literally. The Earth is ravaged, and the biodome that was meant to save them is failing. But when Isabel stumbles upon a long-lost time bridge, the possibility of changing the past emerges, offering one final chance to rewrite history.

There’s just one problem: only one person can make the journey.

As they grapple with the weight of impossible choices, love, and regret, Isabel and Diego must decide whether altering the course of time is worth the risk. Will their sacrifice save the future, or will tampering with the past ensure humanity’s extinction?

Tense, emotional, and thought-provoking, HIVE is a story of survival, love, and the ultimate cost of second chances. When the future is at stake, how far would you go to change it?

In a world on the brink, time is the ultimate weapon.

Trigger Warnings:

HIVE contains some sensitive themes that may be triggering for certain listeners. The story explores terminal illness, death, and emotional loss, particularly through characters grappling with their own mortality. There are also scenes of environmental collapse, human extinction, and moments of despair as the characters confront the end of the world. Additionally, themes of sacrifice and suicide are touched upon in the narrative. Listeners sensitive to these subjects should be aware before diving into the book.

Hive by DL Orton is the first book in the madders of time series. It is fast paced with a really unique and interesting plot. The three main characters Isabel, Diego and Matt each have their own chapters and their own unique ideas about what should be done to avoid the impending global disaster. The prologue in particular is really strong but throughout I found myself really engaged. The author is really good at building emotionally engaging characters while at the same time moving the plot forward.

I must also give a shout out to the brilliant narrators. Both are really good.

Wow!! What a great story!

I read this book last year, so it was great to revisit it again through the audiobook.
The narrators do a fantastic job of capturing the characters love and resilience, especially Diego and Isabel as they fight for the future by travelling to the past to undo apocalyptic events.
It's a creative blend of sci-fi, adventure, romance and a Dystopian reality.
The villain is depicted well, and you can feel the greed and power come through the narration.
I enjoyed the humour contrasting the high stakes, and seeing technology spiral out of control in the hands of the enemy.
It's thought provoking and philosophical, I loved the pop culture references to time travel, and seeing the characters journeys as they face loss and sacrifice to change to the world.

Excellent narration and gripping storyline

Hive by DL Orton starts in the near future. Civilisation has collapsed and the last humans, Diego and Isabel, are trying to survive in the falling apart ‘biodome’ Eden 17. Only travelling back into the past can save the future.

I really enjoyed the story. There are three different POV characters, Diego, Isabel and Matt. Matt is a scientist who in the future has his consciousness transported to a computer as a sort of human hybrid AI.

Doom is coming in the form of artificial AI micro drones and despite all their efforts it seems more and more inevitable.

Well worth a read!

Excellent characters and narrators
