About this listen

Have you ever seen a random shoe on the side of the road?

Halloween is approaching, and in the seaside town of Seaton, Devon, Ethan Halston's life is changing. His parents are arguing, his gran is losing her memory, and his best friend has a secret.

Things begin to spiral when a child is nearly kidnapped. Has a monstrous shoe creeper come to town, and does Ethan's gran know more than she's letting on?

A brilliantly written book with a fantastic story hook.
I loved the jingle in this one! Great narration that compliments the story.
I just can’t get over this concept and how fantastic and unique it is - a must read.

Well written, great story hook

While the premise leans into the spooky and unusual, what really makes the book shine is its relatability. The family dynamics feel authentic and lived in, particularly Ethan’s relationship with his gran. She reminded me strongly of my own nan, which made those quieter moments land just as powerfully as the creepier ones.

The story understands that tension works best when it is anchored in something real. The emotional grounding here gives the unsettling elements far more weight, resulting in a story that feels thoughtful, funny, and quietly moving.

The audiobook narration deserves special praise. The performance brought real warmth and personality to the characters and elevated the story throughout. It made the world feel alive and immersive from start to finish.

A brilliant middle grade story that blends unease with warmth and strong character work. An easy recommendation for readers who enjoy stories with heart and a touch of something strange beneath the surface.

Impressed by how much heart sits at the centre of this story.

Ian Hunter has created a unique, engaging story here incorporating many topics. I won't add spoilers but it was well read and gripping and worked well as an audiobook. Recommend
