He lived by the rules – until the only rule that mattered was survival.

Recovering from a gunshot wound that nearly cost him his life, Tom Douglas isn’t focused on himself – his concern is for his brother Jack, who seems to have vanished without a trace. Jack’s past is as dangerous as it is complicated. Years ago, he faked his own death to escape an organised crime group, and ever since, he’s been living in the shadows, always one step ahead of those who want to hunt him down.

Now, Tom’s worst fears are coming true. Has Jack’s past finally caught up with him? If so, what has become of his family? Tom has to find them, but the answers he seeks are hidden in a brutal underworld - one more dangerous than anything Tom has faced before.

As he delves into Jack’s secretive life, Tom is forced to confront ruthless enemies, putting his own life on the line. With time running out, he must decide how far he’s willing to go and how much he’s prepared to sacrifice, knowing it will mean crossing a line he swore he never would.

I love all the Tom Douglas mysteries, and am not sure what I'll do without him.

As good as ever

I love this writer and this book didn’t disappoint. From the very start it had me hooked. The constant turns were enough for me not to want to stop. The story weaved in and out until you were invested in the character.
Loved it

Just the most intriguing listen

This is a good story well written but about a third to long. Started well and finished well with a little twist at the end. But! And it is a big but, the middle 80% was just full of repetition and restatement of simple things. The performance was good but a little slow paced for me. But that ma be because of the repetition.

A good yarn but sooooo slow

I've thoroughly enjoyed the adventures of DCI Tom Douglas and his team until this book. The storyline is similar to previous books within the series (child kidnapping), but with a Mafia, Mission Impossible twist.
Tom chases through Venice with his not-so-in-hiding brother Jack, as they endeavour to save Jack's daughter, who an evil witch has kidnapped, while Tom's team tries to find his wife and family, who have gone missing.

It's a race against time, with Tom breaking far too many laws for such a high ranking policeman.

A book that makes you stretch your imagination a little too far.

Lisa Coleman's narration is fabulous, which probably saves the whole show!
