About this listen

A murderous homecoming, a town with a dark secret.

Detective Inspector Marc Fagan thought he had left the past behind when he departed Abergavenny, South Wales, many years ago. But life has a haunting way of pulling you back in, and when a chilling murder rocks the tranquil town, fate decides to test Fagan's resolve.

In this gripping crime thriller, The Dead Will Beckon, Fagan finds himself confronting not just a sinister present, but also the darkest secrets of the town’s past.

After decades of solving crimes in the big city, Fagan returns to his childhood hometown only to face an unexpected case. A woman has been brutally murdered. Fagan is stunned to discover that the victim is none other than his long-lost girlfriend from 40 years ago—a love he thought he had buried with his youth.

Haunted by memories and unresolved emotions, Fagan delves deep into the dark past of Abergavenny, now a place he barely recognizes. The once-familiar faces and streets seem shrouded in secrets, and as he navigates the labyrinthine web of lies, deceit, and betrayal, Fagan realizes that the truth is far darker than he ever imagined.

Fagan finds himself torn between his duty as a detective and his personal quest for closure. Old friendships are rekindled, while bitter adversaries resurface.

In order to catch the killer, Fagan must exorcise ghosts from his past. But in doing so, he discovers a secret that could tear the local community apart.

I just loved this, I had to put everything down and listen to it. I got so absorbed into the story, which I wasnt expecting to do. The two timelines worked so well and really brought the story to life. The little touches like the movies in the 80s brought back so many memories.

At the beginning the author does a little note which describes the research he has put into the book and thanks the relevant people, I mention this as you can really tell how well researched the book is.

The narration really worked it just fit into the Welsh atmosphere.

This was amazing - think I found a new favourite

Good narration and I enjoyed the overall story and thought there was some good character establishment for future books.

I found the heavy lean into the minds of what seemed to be sex obsessed young men a bit gratuitous at times but the storyline was good enough to carry it and got past it.

Definitely looking forward to Fagan dealing with another case!

Good series establisher

I enjoyed the plot, with the multiple timelines aspect being well done to fill in the details & Fagan's backstory. I thought the links to real life wrongdoings (Saville) and important events (e.g. covid, King's coronation) were cleverly used to set the scene.
The characters were well done, was easily absorbed with Fagin's backstory and how it related to present day murder he was investigating.
There were a few inaccuracies such as police using their own phones to record interviews at the police station instead of official equipment but these were forgiven by me as it didn't effect the story bit it may upset other readers.
Bonus star to the narrator Phil Rowe for bringing the book to life and doing a great job on all the different voices (and accents). I've found a new narrator to look out for.
Looking forward to future books and seeing what happens with Fagan's story.

Great start to a new series

Really enjoyed this story, so much more going on than just solving a murder. I liked the dual timeline aspect which brought everything neatly together.
