Critic reviews

Our octogenarian heroine’s determination to investigate a violent crime on her doorstep, leads her to reflect on her colourful past of love and loss, in this wonderfully warm and involving page-turner
A wonderful, life-affirming novel, full of surprises, tender of heart, and infused with a spirit as warm and generous as any I have read. It's a gripping literary whodunnit and so much more . . . I adored it.
Full of unforgettable characters, a beguiling mystery with gorgeous prose, The Night in Question completely captured my heart. Florence Butterfield is a woman I will never forget and her story is one that had me in all kinds of tears. A triumph.
It's brilliant
Totally original, this water-colour pretty novel is as surprising as it is inspirational. I loved it!
I found myself catching my breath at the brilliance of the insight and the clever and truthful way Susan Fletcher reveals Florrie’s complicated emotional journey. A novel filled with love and generosity, it is a triumph.
Every word is a jewel. A richly evocative and moving portrait of an unforgettable heroine who will teach you everything you need to know about life and love and loss. The best book I have read for a long time.
A perfect peach of a novel! Bright and beautiful writing, a delicious cast of characters, and a moreish whodunnit plot told with warmth, wit and emotional intelligence. A novel to be devoured!
A novel to treasure. Susan Fletcher's magical prose sparkles, and the story bursts with optimism, compassion, and gratitude. Glorious – in both writing and spirit – it moved me to tears time and time again.
Moving, uplifting and beautifully written

Susan Fletcher has done it again! A gorgeous story spreading across generations and across the world, interwoven with present day detective work. The level of detail with which she writes can immediately set you right in that moment or place feeling the exact emotion of the main character. Just gorgeous!

Beautifully paced

Not normally my type of genre but some how it held me and I did enjoy it even though it was a little flowery

An amazing story of the happenings in a residential home.

I was unable to put it down! Beautifully written, I felt I was right there in The Apple Store and the church. My only complaint is that it ended!

An absolute joy of a read

Deeply moving. Enthralling , exciting , poignant, absorbing I couldn’t stop listening. The narration does full justice to the characterisation I feel bereft now I’ve finished listening but Florrie will live on in my heart.

Absolutely glorious

I found the style of writing so very, very irritating. The constant listing of descriptions had me shouting at the reader "just get on with it". The book could have been half the length if she hadn't kept listing descriptions like someone who didn't quite know if you would understand what is being said or like a teacher would explain something in detail to a somewhat slow pupil or an author who just loved her pretty descriptions (😉). It just wasn't for me.

So sorry, I couldn't stand this
