NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ● In this official Gears of War tie-in novel—leading directly into the events of Gears of War: E-Day—the last human survivors of a vicious alien attack fight a pivotal battle that sets the stage for humanity’s darkest day.

As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they were torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus—decorated war hero, convicted traitor—the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep.

As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be re-lived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them—but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago? not finished listening yet but I've read the all the books and fills in a lot of the stories between games

Good book

Karen Traviss expands the massive meat hunks from the games into real flesh and bone characters. Theres themes of guilt, grief and what you find within yourself to pick yourself up and carry on, which all broadens the source material admirably.
Its perhaps slightly drawn out, with some of the action washing over the listener more than gripping them by the throat as you'd hope for with such an action focused game to draw from. Overall though this is a admirable bit of world - and character - building.

Loved this book! Was great to get some extra lore of the. Squad growing up. Liked that we got to see things from Doms pov.

Great story and lore

Good for fans of the games who wanted to hear a bit more of the characters’ backstories. The flashback sequences are by far the more interesting parts of the book, and probably could have stood alone, without the “present day” sections.

The narrator was okay - it’s a bit jarring to begin with, having a female narrator when most of the cast are men, but you get used to it after a while. Watch out for the dodgy Antipodean accents, mind 😬

Overall, an enjoyable story that I’d recommend to fans of the franchise.
