When a well-known British TV historian, Marmaduke Godolphin, is found murdered in the canals of Venice during carnival, stabbed by a stiletto blade, the Venetian police are eager to have the case solved and cleared up within a day - murder is bad for tourism!

The police recruit the help of retired archivist, Arnold Clover. Godolphin had hired his services on arriving in Venice to help sort through some historical papers of note. These dusty documents may contain previously unknown information about the assassination of the murderer, Lorenzino de' Medici, 500 years previously.

How coincidental that Godolphin meets his death in the same place as the Medici murderer, Lorenzino, on a cold, dark, bloody night. Can Arnold use his powers of perception to establish a link and solve the murder of Godolphin?©2022 David Hewson (P)2022 W. F. Howes Ltd

The part of this book set around a plot to discover the murderer of a long dead Medici is a fascinating study of history and historical enquiry. That will probably put loads of people off but it shouldn’t. It’s as fascinating a story as the Princes in the Tower. There’s a historian who’s a bit David Starkey and a bit Peter Snow with his averagely qualified son and a cast of followers. The woman Carabinieri Captain is a gem. My main complaint is that this is the second book recently where the ‘hero’ is a disappointed middle aged man blaming all his woes on the fact the world has changed. There’s a long whinge at the start about how digitisation is taking away the need for archivists to look at original documents. It’s supposed to invoke a world that has left people with a lifetime’s experience redundant. The only trouble is that it’s bollocks. The main character is a bitter little man and rather tedious. I rather hoped someone would push him under a gondola. Ignore him and enjoy the mystery

Great mystery, dreary protagonist

Well written and superbly narrated although it is necessary to pay close attention to the detail!

Fascinating!

I loved this book. The detailed descriptions of Venice made you feel you were there and it was a very different slant on a crime thriller. Add Richard Armitage with an Italian accent and what’s not to love. Fab!

Venice made real

Read beautifully by Richard Armitage, this crime novel set in modern Venice follows retired archivist, Arnold, as he as unwillingly assists razor sharp Italian Police Detective, Valentina, to solve the murder of the unlamented but glamorously named Marmaduke Gadolphin. The history and colour of Venice is brought to life and the research and plot keep you interested. I’m buying the second book and planning my first trip to Venice…

The historical setting, true or invented made the story fascinating and pushes me to visit Venice and northern Italy. The final unravelling of the complicity of the wife was broadcast.

Complex interweaving plot
