No war can be fought with clean hands. Not even the ones waged for the right reasons. Not even the ones you win.

Tisaanah bargained away her own freedom to save those she left behind in slavery. Now, bound by her blood pact, she must fight the Orders' war—and Max is determined to protect her at all costs.

But when a betrayal tears apart Ara, Max and Tisaanah are pushed into an even bloodier conflict. Tisaanah must gamble with Reshaye's power to claim an impossible victory. And Max, forced into leadership, must confront everything he hoped to forget: his past, and his own mysterious magic.

All the while, darker forces loom—far darker, even, than the Orders' secrets.

As Tisaanah and Max are ensnared in a web of ancient magic and twisted secrets, one question remains: what are they willing to sacrifice for victory? For power? For love?

Contains mature themes.

I loved this story but couldn’t listen past chapter 6 and switched to reading only the book.

The female narrator constantly sounded like she was on the brink of crying, not conveying the strength of Tissanah that I had read. Which is a shame because she has a lovely voice. Also her version of Max sounded like a gremlin which was an odd choice. I would have still happily finished the audiobook if it was purely narrated by Esther as I could get past the wavering voice.

However, Dan’s performance was the nail in the coffin. I can’t put into words how off putting the male narrator was, somehow both equally monotone and repetitively rhythmic. Hard to listen to, he seemed to struggle with the pace of reading out loud.

The book however is brilliant, Carissa is a brilliant writer who brings depth to her characters and the world she had created. I really recommend buying her books!

Make sure to listen to the sample before purchasing!

Excellent continuation of the series. The audio was also so much better than the first book. Looking forward to the next book now.

Second great book in the series

The male narrators pacing was very off, I had to slow the book down many times and there were many stomach noises and things that should’ve been edited out in the female POVs

Good book, narrator’s couldve done better

I loved the book but it was hard to stay focused through the monotone male narration and although the female narrator was great her swallow noises were getting in my nerves 😅

once I got past that its a solid 4/5 book

great story rubbish narration

This entry was seriously good. While the beginning felt slow and took time to establish its footing, the payoff in the latter half was absolutely worth it. I couldn't even guess where the story was going, and I love when novels expand within their own world as the story progresses and it's not just all thrown to us from the start. The author’s exploration of grief and loss towards the end was nothing short of phenomenal, I couldn't move on with the story after those chapters. And the end???? I'm gutted, can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Great
