About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the football cages of East London to broadcasting to millions, the engine powering Alex Scott's remarkable journey has always been her resilience. But thanks to a 'push-through mentality' the world has only ever seen the 'strong' side of Alex Scott. Now Alex is ready to lower the shield. In How (Not) to Be Strong, Alex shares the lessons that have shaped her, from finally confronting the legacy of a tumultuous childhood to tarnished truth behind the gleaming football trophies.

With raw honesty, Alex shows how she's tackled life's challenges and that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is show your most vulnerable side to the world.

I loved listening to Alex speak her words, her truth and her emotion. I gained an insight into the world of sport I didn’t understand. Alex has turned her childhood trauma of domestic abuse into something positive and shines light on the impact trauma has on victim-survivors long after they are considered safe. I hope your words help your mum to heal and see the powerhouse and role model she clearly is.

Your success and joy has come from grit and determination to work damn hard and when I watch you on TV I will have a better understanding of the journey you have taken to get where you are and those who have supported you along that rocky path.

Highly recommend to anyone.

Uplifting, incredibly powerful depiction of trauma, female empowerment and success

I usually get bored of autobiographies or flick a chapter or 2 ahead. Every word was taken in with so many twists and turns! The power this woman not only has but shares and puts herself in the centre of change is just amazing. Give it a listen. You don't have to like football to listen to/read this book x

what a woman!
