Summary

A mystic portal lies open. A chilling predator stalks the night. Can an undaunted student stop the darkness from spreading?

Giles Chamberlain returns to a snowbound Cambridge after Christmas spent with his girlfriend. Determined to prove himself to her family, he sets out to discover what became of her missing brother. But when he encounters a sinister figure prowling the college’s rooftops, he suspects last semester’s creature was not the only entity to cross into our world.

After the tight-lipped Professor Gupta refuses his plea for help, Giles enlists his feuding friends to locate the otherworldly passage. As hunters and hunted converge on the portal, the students discover just how far the old academic will go to keep his secret safe.

Faced with forces beyond his imagination, can Giles conjure up the key to save them all?

Gate of Shadows is the spine-tingling second book in the Cambridge Gothic fantasy trilogy. If you like resourceful heroes, nail-biting action, and atmospheric settings, then you’ll love Mark Wells’ pause-resisting tale.

Great read, loved the first book and love this one

I really enjoyed the first book and the second didn't disappoint, great story, very good performance. The divergence in story lines keeps things interesting. Well worth a listen!

Good but not brilliant sequel

St John’s college continues to produce monsters and thrills galore, and our trusty band of students battle hard to save themselves and their friends. It got slightly, very slightly, slow in the middle, thus the 4 rather than 5 stars, but I will be buying the next instalment. The characters are great and the detail about St Johns history and traditions are cleverly woven through the tale.

Excellent

It’s rare to find a narrator who so flawlessly takes you through a story that reality is suspended. Wonderfully inventive yarn , pure escapism.

Looking forward to Valley of Shadows?

Even better than book 1, in my humble opinion. I am invested in the gang

Superb; just beautifully superb

Usually… well, given the opportunity I will lose myself blissfully in a good book for hours. However, there are times when the powers that be give me a ‘billy-do’ list. Then I’ll listen while my hands are busy. High jinks and drama. Yet quintessentially British… go on, give it a punt.

So engrossing

This author really knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. While listening to this I was often shouting at the characters to buck up and speak to each other rather than just assuming. This book leaves you eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

The narrator allows you to feel what each person is feeling just through his style.

Thank you. Well done. And hurry up with number 3!
