Britain is under New Management. The disbanding of the Laundry - the British espionage agency that deals with supernatural threats - has culminated in the unthinkable: an elder god in residence in 10 Downing Street.

But in true 'the enemy of my enemy' fashion, Mhari Murphy finds herself working with His Excellency Nylarlathotep on foreign policy - there are worse things, it seems, than an elder god in power, and they lie in deepest, darkest America.

A thousand-mile-wide storm system has blanketed the Midwest, and the president is nowhere to be found. Mhari must lead a task force of disgraced Laundry personnel into the storm front to discover the truth. But working for an elder god is never easy, and as the stakes rise, Mhari will soon question exactly where her loyalties really lie.

Stross at the top of his game - which is to say, few do it better (KIRKUS)
Alternately chilling and hilarious (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY)

Love this series of books, it’s a real shame that this narrator came up with the most inappropriate/phoneyest collection canned English accents for characters we know and love. Why could she not at least have listened to some of the previous books, a waste of a wonderful opportunity for us to have loved/admired her work.

Failure to pronounce the protagonist’s name correctly, shame!

Story as captivating as always, but I hope that an audible version read by Jack Hawkins is released soon.....Ms Bouvards' reading is really nowhere as good :(

Excellent Story, but.......

As usual a fabulous work from Stross, but who on earth is responsible for allowing this woman to “perform “ this book.
I only rated the performance on this one star because it would not let me rate it at no stars.
Her performance was horrendous. I did read the negative reviews before but though how bad can it be? If I had realised just how bad I would have bought the book instead. Her appalling attempts at accents and constant mispronunciations were very distracting.
The written word is proof read prior to publication is there no such system for an audio books? If there is then someone needs to be shown the door!

Do they not “proof listen”

Genuinely, I can't imagine a voice less suited to this story. Did no one listen to it before it was delivered?

Good Story, baffling voice actor

No-one thought to tell the narrator how to pronounce the lead character's name! Shame on the producers!! And she was a poor choice for this reading anyway, nearly all her character voices were terrible, but again I blame the producers, who chose an American narrator with zero capability to do the variety of British accents (male and female) required by the story. The story itself was pretty original and a nicely put together episode of the Laundry Files Saga. Such a shame about the jarring narration!
