Dalgliesh recognised with weary resignation the first lie and wondered how many more there would be before the investigation was complete.

On a crisp January morning, a group of third year nursing students gather in Nightingale House for a clinical lesson. One student will play the patient, while the others practice their nursing skills. But none of them is prepared for the demonstration's gruesome end.

Later, when a student dies by apparent suicide, Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh is sure her death must be connected to what happened during that fateful demonstration. But in order to prove this and uncover the truth, he must sweep away a cloud of secrets, lies and blackmail at the nursing school - before there are any more deaths.

Wonderfully written and artfully read. For all detective fiction fans.

Characters are flawed and believable beings, not merely two-dimensional tools.

Highly Recommendef

Despite being set in pre decimal Britain this novel has worn well. I liked the range of characters and the author's cool and complete command of language.

Still gripping

I remember seeing the TV Adaptation years ago. The life of the nurses is portrayed so well, as insular as a nunnery. PD James describes enclosed worlds so well. You feel the unpopularity of certain characters for others dislike of them, and the love given to those whom people like. The actual life of some of the more popular characters is still a shock when they are targeted for their lives to be ended.

A great reading of a through novel.

Excellent pacing and well read
