Here is a tale straight from the fireside. We are compelled to follow the humble and mysterious figure of the linen weaver Silas Marner, on his journey from solitude and exile to the warmth and joy of family life. His path is a strange one; when he loses his hoard of hard-earned coins all seems to be lost, but in place of the golden guineas come the golden curls of a child - and from desolate misery comes triumphant joy.

A steady read that measures the ups and downs of a mysterious character. Profound in a low key way, like Ishiguro

Intimate and rewarding

This is a familiar story to me and finds George Eliot at her most philosophical - this story of a man damaged by injustice and loneliness and finding his way to life and light, has a feeling of fable to it. The narrator delivers a measured and authoritative performance and defines each character with just the right amount of vocal range. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Classic Story, well-told

Excellent book but a shame that the accents, tone and volume of the performance was often totally mismatched to the description of the scene given by the book - it made it harder to truly engage and feel the story.

Would recommend to friends though.

Good book, not so keen on the performance

This is a moral tale, a bit like Thomas Hardy for sadness. But the story comes good in the end. V well read.

A happy ending

This book was warmly read and well voiced with a diversity of characterisation. The story itself is a heartwarming tale of redemption and loss with a small circle of well drawn characters.

Delightful novel
